Default RIP to my WRX :(

Sadly the engine has given up the ghost.
I dropped it off this morning at the garage, thinking it needed a service (new plugs to be exact) as the CEL lit up on Saturday and it started running awful.
Turns out its going to cost upwards of £1000 now. Heartbroken isn't the word!

Second hand engine for a few hundred quid, drop it in and off you go. There's so many good cars being broken these days that a knacked engine doesn't mean the end and can actually be sorted pretty cheaply.

not decided on a price yet

i paid over 1k for it then spent another 1k on it

they usually go for £1100-£1350 lifted straight out of a car without fresh everything like mine but i price things to sell not to be sat around for ages

i will have a ponder over it and get back to you-i need to buy a cheap run-around 1st while my car is off the road

I had a terrible signal when I spoke to him, ill have to ring tomorrow. Burned/bent valves I think he said? A part of the engine(sorry I'm useless with cars) should be giving out about 125psi? One of mine is at 60psi, another is at 0. Sorry if that sounds vague, ill get a proper update off him tomorrow

Yes, compression test is what he said. It's number 1 & 3 that are down

I'm not that knowledgeable about the Impreza engine yet, but cylinders 1 and 3 are on the same side aren't they? I'd have thought that if the other side was showing good compression, and they've mentioned valves then is it not likely that it's just the head which would need replacing rather than the whole engine?

Do they still do wet and dry compression tests ? I think they put thick oil in the cylinders if it goes up its the rings if it still the same its the valves.

Ill have to speak to him properly today and see what happens. I've had a very generous offer off a member on here saying they will pick up the bill and I pay it back in 10 installments!
This place is something else!

If its only the valves then fitting new ones and doing the head gaskets is all that should be needed really, as long as valve seats are ok etc.

shouldn't really be costing a grand for that to be done tbh.

This is the route I went down, got a reasonably low miler for my bugeye for £400 and had a guy I know fit it for a few hundred. Going great guns since doing it back in Feb.

Key here is the source, I was able to get the info on the car it had been removed from. Buying from dodgey Kevo on ebay is a sure way to get burned though.

As shreksta said
Get one off someone like Matty
Who will have heard it running, driven it, checked the condition of the car verses engine milage, looked at the fluids before it has been pulled.

The other thing that a lot of people don't do is find out exactly why it let go in the first place, then drop another engine in only to have that let go too, when maybe they had a dodgy fuel pump or maf or a plethora of other possibilities.

You really need to find out what went wrong and why with the original engine before you start booting it with a replacement in situ.

I didn't manage to get hold on him today. Been hectic at work since 7am until now.
I think I purchased a dodgy motor from the start (engine wise).
About a month after picking it up, I checked the oil, it was empty, although I know it was full on th day of purchase. Took it to a mechanic local to me and he told me that's not uncommon with these cars. I had my doubts but listened as he's the mechanic, not me.
Fuel consumption has always been heavy. I do 25miles a day, Mon to Fri. It costs me around £50 - £55. Surely that's too much?

2.0L or 2.5 Paul?

2.0L shouldn't be drinking oil, so he's talking crap. 2.5's on the other hand are more like Rotary's - top the oil of when you fill the car with petrol.

Fuel consumption is about right if it's a bit of a stop start daily commute.
