It's been an age since I posted but I just bought a new WRX-STI.
After 2000km - and just after the run in service the crankshaft bearing has gone.
The local dealer will repair it under warranty of course but I can't help but think they should be replacing the car or at least the engine! It's three weeks old for heavens sake.
Anyone have this experience of this happening to them and how their dealer/Subaru handled it.
The ones here were even reluctant to approach Subaru until I nagged them into it!

New engine without out fail or it will just fail again. They will have to split the engine to get to the crank anyway (which will need replacing) so the labour involved will out weigh the cost of a new short motor. They will also have to fit a new oil cooler.

What Gear Head says, but as for how Subaru will deal with it be careful. They will doubtless try and blame you same as they do more most of the engine failures in the thread at the top of this page! Stick to your guns and don't listen to any of their nonsense!
There have been a lot of engine failures since 2007 and Subaru d their best to wriggle out of dealing with them properly!

it dpends on damage, if the bearings have damaged the block then its block, crank etc etc first thing realy is to find out why it failed and assess what actualy damage has been done.

Odd that
The new age bottom end is normally bulletproof. And Subaru don't do a running in service. Although like you I did.
Is it a hatch or Saloon?
Was there any oil left in sump as common ring land failure can turn it into a diesel and quickly guzzle up all your oil.
I'd be tempted when the short motor comes back. to give it to someone to rebuild it with Cosworth bits and larger head studs Uprated gaskets extra. It will cost you a grand of two but you'll have a brill motor that should run 450bhp for 5 years no problem.
IMHO

Tony

those sort of things aren't really an option out here (I'm in Dubai).
Our service interval is every 5,000km (3,125 miles!) but they do the first service at 1,500km.

I would go for a new engine from Subaru personally, it's the least they can do.
What are the laws out there regarding rejecting a vehicle?

Ah of course your right. Typical that Dubai would import from US when Japan is closer.
So far the dealer has very reluctantly agreed to talk to Subaru is Japan to see if they can do anything.
They haven't actually opened the engine yet to find out what happened as if they do that they said they will only repair it and hand it back.
Knowing Dubai there is every chance they don't have any engines in the country anyway.
I'm wondering whether to contact Subaru in japan directly.

Great news.
If you plan on keeping the car long term it would be worth seeing if any specialists local to you would forge the engine and give you peace of mind.
A nice by product of doing that is the ability to cross blades with high power German saloons on the straights, and THEN humiliate them through the bends.

Neither are correct. Dubai (UAE) is part of the GCC countries (Saudi Arabian) Market and is similar to the European LHD build with some minor variations.
Destination Country code should/will be "KS" (unless it's a grey import from the states
