What's the best way to get a few more BHP from my Type R? i have already fitted a full de-cat Mongoose exhaust and have a HKS filter to go on.

Lovely looking car!

Get it checked out by a local specialist and sort any possible problems first and take their advice!

IMO i'd start off with better brakes. Followed by an esl daughterboard to see what your car is doing and any potential problems that the mapper can see.

Then it's all down hill from there

The front brakes do look lost behind the 18's.

I've read people have blown engines up after fitting the HKS and not getting it mapped?

This is a big argument / discussion on here!

I am no expert but i trust the various experts i take my car to who have told me the following. Bolt on air filters knacker MAF's, a knackered MAF knackers the engine.

Most set ups on here will have an air filter but it's because they're running a MAFless set up using a Alcatek/GEMS/ESL edu etc....

Not a bad set up at all. AF is very well respected on here!

You might want to look in to the advantages of an eel daughterboard over the ecutek.

I think so!

Duncan@racedynamix would be the one to speak to. He's on here and you'll prob find him over in the ecu section. He's done a lot of development work on it. I'm pretty sure it can run a mafless set up with AL and LC

Have you had anything mapped by them?

Not sure about launch and anti lag, but ESL would certainly give you switchable maps and ability to run mafless, which are advantages over remapping the stock ECU.

Doubt you can go wrong with the AF set though.

By the way anyone know what he means by resonator delete? Not come across this before

I don't want to have fortunes in the car cos it's only a toy and i know how easy it is to get carried away.

No that's fair enough, ESL is about £600 all in inc fitting/mapping IIRC. By the way what fuel are you running this on? Has it been mapped for UK fuel or are you using an additive?

Always run it on Tesco 99 and don't use any additive

and dont put the HKS 'filter of destruction' anywhere near it

Unless your planning big mods, changing the ECU is expensive for what you will gain, the standard one is perfectably acceptable

Looks sweet, I miss my Type R

OK, well whatever you do it may be beneficial to get it mapped for UK fuel, given as you've decatted it aswell. Should make it safer and allow a bit of a power boost to boot.

Yes remap is a must, Give Duncan a ring, he will sort it out, but do all your 'first stage' mods first, then get it done

High flow Panel filter will be fine for up to 350 (I have a geuine STI one im putting up for sale if you want, and its at my dads on the Wirral, only used for 2k miles), and you wont be changing MAF sensors every few months that way

Why do they cause problems though?

I like the look of the mushroom filters under the bonnet plus the noise.

They fall apart

and dont be a lemon - who gives a crap what it looks like under the bonnet, a type R makes a lovely noise on its own, no need for chav additions!

Please dont tell me your putting a VTA dump valve on as well?
