Try get an sti type R for that money if it's more old fashioned raw appeal your after.
Especially if it's going to be a second car and not a daily.

WR Blue WRX is your best option, you'd get a decent one for that I think

Plenty others about though in black, silver etc.

It all depends on what you are using it for daily driver, weekend toy, 2nd car etc?

Like has previously been said the classics are more raw and for that sort of money you will get a fairly decent one. The newage are much more grown up in their driving manners. I would go for a well sorted classic but watch out for the rust!

Check this motor out and just under your 4k budget

Ye the 96 impreza is nice but i wouldnt want an impreza before 98 as i prefer the newer dash and facelifted front end etc, if i could find a type r under my budget that would be awesome especially in the wrc blue!

Stick to what you want, no point in compromising. I'm sure you will find one, may just take a bit of time

Don't spend all your budget on your car. Keep some back for repairs because at the price you are looking to pay for a Type R there will be issues. Mint ones command a premium of around £6k - £7k.

Buy a 2003-2005 Blobeye, rust free, mappable and 36mpg around town after a few cheap mods!

Something like this for maybe 3k if they took the offer. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-SUBAR...item35d09c43f5

buy a very good classic, turbo 2000 would be cheaper on insurance and with a few simple mods you can have around 280bhp

facelifted front is better i agree, but the newer dash and doorcards are an UTTER disappointment* in truth, there are some examples from around 1997 / 98 that have the newer front as standard but earlier dash.

newer dash and doorcard pitfalls:
  • ergonomically the buttons for various things are much better located on earlier dash.
  • centre top cubby doesn't pop up, passenger top cubby where fitted does.
  • no ledge to rest / sit things on under newer dash clock cluster, this was actually bloody useful on the earlier dash and i miss it.
  • inferior materials used on newer dash and doorcard trim mean that the cards go all loose and baggy where your arm comes into contact with them and thus look rubbish.

the older dash may look a bit boring but when flocked can look amazing and is ergonomically superior IMO

by the way, the blue you crave on a classic is actually called Sonic blue

there is also 'reddish blue' (65c) which comes a close second, an example of this can be seen under My Subaru on www.imprezarally.com

I couldn't manage 36mpg on a motorway going at a steady 60mph let alone around town. More like 16mpg around town for mine.

Not in the slightest. I enjoy it from time to time to and from work but even driving sensibly I'm never getting 30s out of my Wagon.

Something not right there, I do a three mile comute to work then three miles home again every day, cars never warm, get a steady 23 mpg. Definatly around 30 on a run when the car is hot, probably more. Thats running around 320 bhp too.

In terms of Classics, if your thinking Type R then I'd wait a bit longer and save some more, I've only seen dogs around your budget especially as your after a facelift, as said 5-6k+ is around what your looking at for a genuinely nice one.

You may find a decent facelift STi for your budget, but again your perhaps a little under what most will ask for a facelift car.

Realistically I'd say keep a look out for an STi or a very very good UK 2000, the silver wagon in the for sale section will give you an idea of what you should be looking for in terms of a UK for around your budget, basically extremely tidy and either very original or with some very decent mods. This may well be the best way forward as you'll be looking at the very best UK classics rather than STi's at the lower end of the market.

the newages come in World Rally Blue (o2c), I think you and I have a similar appreciation

AS has been said by someone else, hold out for one you like and don't compromise
