STI power on a WRX gearbox
Hi folks
Peoples opinions please on a classic UK WRX running all STI gear to around 320bhp, apart from the gearbox. Car is fairly low mileage for the year and seems to have been looked after but is it a ticking time bomb?
How much can theses boxes take and for how long? Car has an uprated clutch if that makes a difference or not?

Generally, they start to go pop at anything over 300lb/ft of torque. Any more and you take your chances.

no such thing as a classic uk, so its either uk turbo or import wrx.
will be pushing both pretty hard as said, but its very dependant on how they have been treated and how you treat it going forward as to how long it lasts.
i blew my uk gearbox at 280ftl;b, but im pretty sure i snicked a gear on up shift. I shoudl also add i was hooning round the isle of mann at the time lol

I do like the odd 1/4 mile so just confirmed my thoughts. Def a head over heart decision this one. Don't fancy the cost of a 6 speed a couple of months down the line

I ran 400 on my first classic with the original 752 box and 500 on my second classic (v3 sti) original 752 box, the latter is dragged all the time has done 40+ full on launches and runs in the 10's.
Just to throw a spanner in the works now I've either been super lucky or there's a lot of scaremongering about the 5 speeds.
You roll the dice....
End of the day 5 speeds are cheap as chips and nowt of a job to change.

Lol 400 and 500 on a 752.... you are in a minority of one I suspect The WRX boxes with the longer ratios might cope for a sympathetic while but the short STi ratios of a B4AA would die a death in minutes at that level.
1.4 bar c.320 on a pink exedy. 70k mile box with original clutch barely scored flywheel before I changed the lot. Box lasted about a months worth of use. 3rd gear exploded holding boost on overtake and then full throttle went pop. I suspect the gears were stripping before this as I felt the pink was a disappointment in terms of holding power throughout the power band. I reckon the uprated clutch was stripping instead of slipping.
If you like the car Dan, fit a six speed. It's not hard and it's the best mod by a country mile. If you want to come out in mine you are more than welcome. It's on the road atm

V3 sti 5 speed still going and still getting abused by the lad who bought it off me, bought a standard ra as a replacement project this time and I know I certainly won't be putting a heavy 6 speed in it

The weight really isn't an issue And the amount of abuse you can give it is amazing. I would have killed my B4AA 10 times over by now on track The trick is to use solid mounts to ensure the transmission is solid to the chassis so the car moves as one rather than competing forces
