My car has been, and is being run on Optimax at the moment but I'm going all the way up to Lochiver which is 36 miles from the nearest supplier of SUL/Optimax (ullapool). Given its a twisty road and enjoyable to drive the 36 miles to get back from Ullapool would probably wipe out a 1/4 of a tank meaning its not really worth making the trips down over the few weeks.

I think it would be a good idea to try and stop the ECU from getting too confused by feeding her the local 95 RON with some octaine booster. Is this a cunning plan and if so, where can I get enough booster in the next few days to last 4-5 tankfulls?

If your car is a standard UK car (ie not an import), then I'd just run it on normal unleaded for a few weeks.

Your car will adapt to the Optimax/SUL when you get back.

Having just returned from the area, you might want to know that SUL at Ullapool costs 86.5p per litre!

You'll probably find that you'll only use about 1/8 of a tank in 36 miles, as although the roads are great to drive on, you can only drive on full throttle for part if it, and you soon reach a fun cruising speed which you only need part throttle to maintain.

I was staying up at Tain/Bonar Bridge all last week - great holiday and great weather.

We drove over to Lochiver - along the A837 - great road

Didn't find ANYWHERE up north that did SUL - so had to have 2 tanks of NUL. Back to Optimax now.

I'd just stick to NUL for your trip Kenny - you wont notice that much of a difference and it will soon relearn when you come back down.

Have a great holiday - lovely part of the world.

Richard.

Whats the octane value on Optimax?

I noticed a label on the counter of the Shell garage at Forth Road Bridge stating 98.6.

I thought it was higher

98.6 is what I thought it was - for the same price as the 97 SUL it's good but when I first read about it I was expecting something higher as well.

86p kinda expected that though. I know the roads up there very well and fear I may take advantage of that knoweldge and hump the fuel economy. I'm running 1.1 bar from a dawes and a little concerned about knock hence the reluctance to use NUL.

I'm open to advertising if it resolves my problem/concerns.....as long as I get offered good prices

Kenny, I'm running mine at 16.5PSI, which can sometimes peak close to the 17 mark - when I was running NUL up North I didn't have an issues - weather was pretty hot as well.

Didn't push the car 'that' hard though, but gave it a fair run.
