Hey there.
Im new to this forum as i have just purchased a 96 silver wrx sti V2. Not been got it yet. Its still in Japan! Will get my hands on it in mid May!!
Was just wondering how many of you are in edinburgh?
Also, could sum 1 tell me if the RED ROP engines are more powerfull than the normal engines?

I'm new to the Scooby Scene too, not got mine yet either, Pick her up in 8 Days (not like I'm counting)
As for engines, I'm lead to believe that the jap engines are stronger, more durable and accept being tuned alot more than a UK car.

You might be right actually. I think ive heard something about the pistons being better quality.
If i'm right, the compression ratio will be another difference.
Just a word of warning. Make sure you use optimax and if you can afford it, Octane Booster. I blew my Jap import up because i just used Optimax.
With another engine in now, i only use Optimax + Octane Booster. Another good first buy would be a Knock link so that you can monitor pre-egnition.
Dont worry, these Jap cars are great but because their ECU's are set up for running on 100ron fuel, they dont take too kindly to other types.
I was ill advised and i just want to make sure any other buyers arent.

Ive been told to use optimax 2. Not been told about this Octane stuff tho!! What is this all about?

Jap cars in Japan run on 100 RON fuel, for them to run to their maximum efficiency in the UK you require a fuel addative to be mixed with the fuel in the tank as UK spec fuel is (correct me if i'm wrong) 95 and 97 RON

One reason to use OB is to get the car to run at optimum levels but there is another more important and that is to reduce the likelihood of detonation or pinking or knocking or pre-egnition (whatever you want to call it)
Detonation can be very harmful to your engine. I'll not go into it in detail. Basically, the fuel coming into a cylinder explodes before it should. At this point, the piston is still on its way up. The top of the piston slams into this detonation. What should happen is the fuel should combust from the provided spark as and when the piston has got to the top of the stroke thus forcing it back down again.
To cut a long story short, Octance booster will help delay this detonation. There are many other methods like reducing cyclinder temps by getting a larger intercooler or retarding the timing or lowering the level of boost etc etc.
What a knocklink does is tell you when this detting is happening. It may not be audible over the engine noise which is why this simple guage is very useful.
If you know its happening, you can do something about it. If you dont know its happening and do what i did and continued using a lead foot, you are very likely to loose your engine.
My opinion is for a Jap car, a knocklink is important especially if the ECU has not been changed from the Jap specs. UK car not so important unless you start to modify, like fiddle with boost levels etc

There seem to be a lot of new scoobies in the edinburgh and east lothian area. I'm in the centre of toon but am down the east coast most weekends for a wee run. Coast road between Longniddry and North Berwick with a few twisties in at whitekirk. then over the back roads to whitinghame/gifford area.

Yep, you'll need a big overdraft ! My Cossie ran on Optimax and Octane Booster. About £50 to fill it up..200 miles later..empty.
I'm one of the very few who's bought a Scooby cos it's more econimical !!!

The red top engine refers to the colour of the inlet manifolds. Usually it means that there's an STi engine in the car, which has had extra work done by Subaru Technic International. Not sure of the exact details for the V2, but on the later models there were stronger pistons, lighter valves and I'm sure some other 'tweaks' ! It's the one to have for further tuning too. On the later models the Jap WRX had 260 bhp, and the Jap WRX STi had 280.
Standard UK spec cars (classic shape) have around 215bhp, and are generally lower spec than the Jap ones, so you chose well. Just be careful with your fuel, and as someone else advised, get a knocklink just in case.
For your info you can get octane booster from Pentland Components in Edinburgh (Leith, Sighthill and Brunsfield). There are a couple of subaru fans working there too, so you might get some chat while there
Also you can get knocklinks from J W racing (www.j-w-racing.com I think).
Have fun with the new car, and look out for a Y Reg P1 on your travels (2 door impreza in light metalic blue).

hi m8,
ALWAYS USE optimax and booster, if you are stuck of optimax, ie up north use super u/l and two bottles of booster, even then dont go totaly mental, and if you can turn your boost down a wee bit, i run .6 of a bar and 0.1 of a bar and h20s happy at that, a 95 wrx with a SCOOBYSPORT mota, and it will do a happy 150mph on the gps all day, though i dont know the bhp yet as its still to go to star for the rollers!
its also worth while getting the geometreys done as the nips do some strange stuff to there settings!
oh, and get good oil, and a new cam belt, spark plugs and be carefull where you take it to get the work done.................
as i have found out to my cost i would not go north of edinburgh, put it that way, east,west or south!
