Default Outside light

I have this outside light. Nothing special and works on a basic switch on and off.

I’ve been to various gardening / builders shops and none can help. Can you?

I’d like to leave the switch on but have a sensor that automatically turns it on and off as it gets dark / light.

id assume it’s easy enough to add a sensor but can’t find one.

id love it even more if another sensor could be added to it that made it go from dim to brighter when someone walked past.

or would it be easier to change the light to something that can do the above?

I think what you're looking for is called a photocell. Plenty about for around £10. That should sort the auto on/off but not the the dimming, no idea if that would be possible easily.

as said fit a photo cell and kit, you will struggle with a dusk till dawn light being ceiling mounted.

Flex then couple of connector blocks in the light.

There's these wee photocell kits that can be retrofitted to the light but it looks like its in a dark spot so might be on more than u want

Got one like this from edmundson, cheaper too:

It switches the outdoor lights from dusk to dawn. Works really well and easy to wire. IIRC you need four core cable?

Steinel nightmatic 3000.

turns on when dark, off when light.

Also has a economy mode which you adjust to turn the light off late at night, it can also turn it back on in the morning for those dark winter mornings.

Only issue with photocells, is making sure they are positioned so that car headlamps don't shine on it as it does confuse them.

Im not sure what you are on about, if that was the case when ya headlights shone on street lights they would be on and off as you come over a hill etc,
Try shining a torch on any street light or photocell, it wont "just" go off lol

You will find installation instructions with the P Cell kits, these tell you the best place, height, facing wall is best.

Experience: our old driveway is on a incline, car headlamps shone upwards onto the sensor, was a Nema type mounted 10ft high on the wall. Streetlight photocells are higher. Had to move it, not a major job, but something to be mindful of with wall mounted sensors. It wouldn't turn off straight away, took about 20secs. Somewhat annoying when counting the change for the Chinese delivery and the light above me in the porch turns off as the driver has left his car running LOL.

Probably why the sensors are on the top pointing towards the sky rather than towards cars.

And yet a good 99% of wall mounted lights with sensors are on the front face . . this inc the LDR that controls the DTD part lol
