Stats boffin has news for England
From correspondents in Wellington

WHILE England will take home the trophy, New Zealand rugby fans can take comfort in the fact that – on a purely statistical basis – the All Blacks won the rugby World Cup.
According to Massey University sports statistician Dr Hugh Morton, New Zealand were the best-performed team in the competition, based on his "adjustive ranking system",
According to his system, a team increases its points if it plays well and decreases its points if it does not.
This differs from the accumulative system, which awards four points for a win but which never goes down if a team fails to win.
Applying this system, using a well-known statistical procedure called multiple regression, to the results of all 48 World Cup matches, puts New Zealand at the top of the table with 112.05 points, Australia second at 104.86, England third on 104.14, followed by France at 93.83 and South Africa on 88.69.
"Using my system several groups' ratings are very close and really are not significantly different," Dr Morton said in a statement.
"Although England won the tournament, they are not top seeds."

YOUR team is knocked out of the World Cup in the semi-finals. So what do you do? Claim some of the triumph any way you can - even if it means overlooking an often antagonistic relationship and sidling up to the mob who dumped you out of the tournament in the first place.
England's champions yesterday won effusive praise from French President Jacques Chirac, who said their defeat of Australia was "a victory for Europe".
"Rarely have I witnessed a match so engaging and of such intensity," the French president wrote in a congratulatory message to England prime minister Tony Blair.
Chirac praised the "coolness and intelligence" of five-eighth Jonny Wilkinson, whose last-minute drop goal secured the win.
"This deserved victory is also a victory for Europe," Chirac wrote. "Thanks to the extraordinary talent of the English players, the World Cup is coming to the northern hemisphere for the first time. All lovers of rugby in France and in Europe share the joy of the English fans."

New Zealand = best players in the world, uninspiring captain and naive selection policy.
England = superb players plus best coaching staff. This is why England won, and well deserved it was too.
