Default England strikers...........

..........in light of recent events and the ongoing Owen situation, who do you think Sven will take to the WC?

Surely he has an obligation to take the in-form strikers from EPL,which, if stats are correct, would indicate Darren Bent making the squad as he has a stack more goals than any other english striker in the country, followed by Vassell.

The point against his inclusion, or indeed, making the starting 11 is lack of experience, but how on earth is he going to get the experience if he doesn't play?

Peter Crouch is ok if you're 1-0 down with 20 mins left, as is defoe. Beattie is a too 1 dimensional striker as is Johnson.

What are the options.......................and should Wayne go to the WC?

No chance that Rooney will be fit. I think United will not allow him to go if they are not happy he's recovered.

Rooney will go, regardless.

I agree with Mark, Terry Butcher knows nothing.

A shadow of Rooney would still outclass Bent, Crouch, etc. He wouldn't be 'taking up a place', not at all.

Plus, there's no chance of United holding him back, especially if there's a hope he'll make some sort of appearance.

Not even Sir Alex would be able to prevent his hunger to play. If they did hold him back, I don't think I'd like the outcome.

The lad wont even be fit to kick a football let alone get the strength back into his legs etc. Face the fact he's not going to play any part in it. Massive shame. takes the shine off it for me.

Personally, I'd stick with Owen on his own.

Draft in Carrick for the holding role, and give Lampard and Gerrard the licence to support Owen as and when they can.

The alternative strikers don't cut it, I'm afraid, not on the biggest stage of them all.

He'll be able to kick a football in six weeks, but not in the way we need him to.

I think he'll make the latter stages of the competition, even if it's the final twenty (or less) minutes in matches. Beckham made the seven week time frame, even though he wasn't effective when he played.

It's a big shame, I agree, but I remain optimistic that he'll play some part in it.

It could have been anyone else in the squad and we would have had suitable cover, but with Rooney, there's no-one.

Feeling the same way

Even if he does make it, it won't be the same as a 100% fit Rooney out there.
