awesome sight, 52000 flag waving fans. looked to have shearer nearly choked up.

bit corny fixing it for him to take the winning penalty, but **** it the blokes done good for club and country so fair play

could well turn out to be the most memorable testimonial ever

I'll never forget him and Teddy in Euro 96. What a superb duo they were

Good luck to him, he has been the ultimate proffesional since day one

Anyone remember that goal he scored on the volley running in on the net for Southampton (I think it was) where he did a kind of side on overhead kick?

Legend IMHO

A true hero and well done to ITV Sport for covering the match so well. Recorded it and watched it again in the early hours. Excellent stuff and the kind of programme that simply couldn't be done about any other player. It proved how respected he is not just on Tyneside, but throughout Football. I feel proud to say he's my Hero!

Cheers

Long Live Shearer - King of English Football!

Not only a Footballer...

In this time of players who're only interested in money and themselves (plus who they can **** next), it's good to see someone who has pride, honour and committment.

Never what its been about for me,so my grandad was from the toon but that is the closest i can get to proclaiming that I am from the ne. From the moment i saw kitson, beardsely and ferdinand play. and despite going to many matches and not seeing them winong a thing I still support newcastle united 100% and what shearer has done for the club has made me proud

Default Best footballer of all time!

I've got to add my two penneth here.

I'm a Blackburn Rovers fan (born & bred) and Shearer was an absolute legend when he played for us. He scored 30+ premiership goals in each of his seasons with Rovers - truly remarkable. He could score goals from nothing - just half a yard and his timing was unbelievable - I seem to remember him scoring an absolute screamer against Derby (IIRC) where he almost took the crossbar off, and this was 25 yds out and half a yard on the defender.

I've never seen a striker so lethal in the air. When we were at our best we had great wingers, and every time the ball was crossed in from the by-line you would put your house on Shearer being there to nod it home.

Absolutely fearless too - strong, skilful and a real team player - never afraid to lay off the ball to a team-mate if they were in a better scoring position.

When he left us, I was devastated, but really glad he went to Newcastle - just kind of sums him up as a true gent - wanting to play at his home club rather than the glory of Man Utd. Top man for that - he obviously hasn't won the trophies he could have at ManU - but then he doesn't regret that decision.

Tribute to the best player I have ever had the pleasure to see - and pic below in the best shirt he ever wore

A future Newcastle / England Manager I have no doubt

Can someone explain why some of the Newcastle players were getting boo'd during the game?

think it could have been the the celtic fans booing bomsong with him being ex rangers, or it could have been the toon fans shouting "boom" which sounds like they're booing him
