Would it be good to ask Damian Harty, cheif dynamics engineer on here to have a billion questions put to him?

Who would be interested?

If there is enough response I'll twist his arm

All the best

Of course that would be great!

Here are a few questions:

- what can be gained from removing the bonnet scoop?
- why was the Impreza designed to understeer so much?
- what is the optimum ride height front and back for my Impreza GT equipped with 60 N/mm front springs and 30 rear in terms of roll center and damper travel? On Aragosta (Proflex) gravel spec dampers.
- What's the optimum wheel and tyre size for an Impreza GT? (I believe it is 17 x 8 on 225 x 45 /17.)

Oh, and of course:

- what do you recommend to improve the Impreza's performance in terms of suspension, diffs, bushes, anti roll bars, alignment, etc. (not taking comfort noise or expensiture into account).

Hi Claudius

Firstly I think the bonnet scoop question is out of the Damian's field, but also it's worth remembering that Damian would be most useful on questions about vehicle dynamics concepts rather than.. what's the best ARB for model X?

He won't know all of the models and "what's best", but would be great to ask questions like "how come doing x to a car makes y happen", or "is it really true that x means y", or "if I want to make x happen, what do I do?", etc.

All the best

I thought you wanted Subaru specific questions. Sorry about that.

I'll be happy to learn about theoretical vehicle dynamics as well

What exactly does "dynamics" include? Not aerodynamics?

Thanks

I *think* it's mainly chassis dynamics.

We'll need quite a bit of interest / questions to make it interesting to put to damian, so if you're reading this and would be interested to see read or ask questions, let me know here and I'll talk to him.

All the best

I'd be very interested to hear what he has to say. No specifics in mind (yet), but I would like to know more about how these things work.

Be interesting to know what sort of software Prodrive use for it's vehicle modelling, when i did my research at Uni i looked at dynamics using Adams software and it seemed a very powerful package. Interesting to find out what they use.

If it's in his domain, I'd like to know what work they do on torque distribution and how they alter this depending on surface and/or driver

Maybe he could answer some of the 'myths' about improving a scooby's handling.

Could you get him to explain why scoobies handle better with 2 bags of sand in the boot?

Seriously, will be interesting to hear from the guy.

I'd be interested in reading / potentially posting if it comes off

Things like the best compromise between performance / NVH / cost (at differing budget levels i.e. cheap & cheerful up to the full Dave T-S level ) for UK "standard / rough / pot-holed" road use with / without track use etc (MY02 onwards mainly but anything in general)

how's that for a few options...

I can guess some of the answers but within the limits of what can be said by somebody from Prodrive, I'd like to get some comparative (sp?) info on other peoples kits/options etc rather than just "our stuff is the dogs and the rest is pants "

Webbie,

Just re-read your post - maybe not so much on the comparisons side possible then but you get my drift (or not depending upon the dynamics of the situation )

I'd be interested in his views on why there's so much bump steer built into a standard Scoob.

It seems to me that there are a couple of things that can be done so cheaply (Powerstation Anti Bump Steer, Whiteline Anti Lift Kit) that it's amazing they weren't done in the first place.

Webby,
I fall into the category of those who'd at least like to listen in. But I'd never have heard about the proposal but for Claudius's post on some quite different "flame-a-hypocrite" thread, since I don't visit "Suspension" regularly (other than to rail at S-UK about the STiUK suspension rattle, and keep in touch with the other afflicted).

So, how about advertising for a couple of days on a 'sticky' on General.

My Question for Damian?...... No prizes for guessing

would also like to thank claudius for the same reason as above.

woulod like to know what part of prodrive he is coming from? the rally team side of things, or is he more involved in development of things like PPP etc.

in short is he impreza specific or not?

V Interested in this one.

My question would be around how far do the geometry settings go to getting a std car set up properly (ie if you get the geometry right, do you really need eibachs, anti-lift etc.. for 80% of the time, or most normal road driving)

Simon,

Well what happened to this idea? I mean this guy might very well know more about the handling of Impreza's than anyone else. Bring him on!

I would love to ask him:

If you could design a rally type vehicle for the road, what configuration would it take? How might the handling set-up requirments differ if one wanted to build a road car as opposed to a group N type rally car to be raced? Where would you put the engine? What kind of engine would you use? What sort of Wheelbase would be the best compromise? Is steering/chassis feel important? What sort of handling characteristics, in your view, best serve the competent press-on driver: a slight oversteering balance with an electronic control device to reign you in on a damp night, or something without eletronic intervention but instead relying on non-electronic progressive slow-motion loss of grip. Which method of driving through corners would give a road user the best chance to drive fast and safe?
