modifying suspension - question

i live on the isle of wight. the roads are in generally very poor condition. proper b-road twisties. loads of dips, lumps, bumps and potholes.
i think that coilover suspension is most likely un suited to these roads. i would like to know what other people are running, who are used to driving on such roads.
i have always been pleased with bilstein suspension in the past on my pug 205 gti, but am open to suggestions. ride height is also a factor. i do not want the car to go too low.

One of the biggest improvements to road holding and handling you can make on dodgy roads is to reduce your unsprung weight. Lighter wheels, etc.
In terms of dampers.. I'm a bit of a fan of DMS, although I'm a little out of touch over the last 12 months so there may be better options available.
If you are prepared to spend the time testing and developing, go for something with as much adjustment as possible (minimum of bump / rebound seperate adjustments) and chose your springs carefully.

I've no idea what 16" Safaris weigh, but when I changed from 17" Speedline chronos to OZ supertourismos the difference was unbelievable.
(No suspension change at the time, just cut the wheel weight down by nearly 50%)

They should be OK then. Would be interesting to weigh them in comparison to the OZ wheels (and standard, should anyone still have them on the IOW 
). There's a strength issue as well as a weight issue here. I think my OZ wheels would suffer much more than my old Speedlines on the rough. (Getting to the end of the rally is quite important

The Chronos just seemed very heavy. Nic wanted rid of them, as she didn't think she would be able to change one should she get a puncture... (if I ever let her out on her own)

i am running 16" safari's. who make DMS and are they adjustable? what sort of money are we talking for such an application?
