This should explain it better than I can. It discusses the anti-roll bar (aka sway bar or stabiliser bar). The drop links are the 'arms connected to the suspension member' referred too in the article.
The plastic OEM ones (if you have a jap STI/WRX you should already have solid ones) have a tendancy to flex, so they don't make the best use of the existing anti-roll bar. The solid ones are much stiffer, so transmitt the forces to the other side more effectively.
