Default Removing Coilovers which tools ?

All Garage Mechanics

I'm trying to remove the front coilovers and can't find a 19mm spanner to fit because of the recess of the standard topmount.
Deep ring spanners won't fit and a socket won't allow an alley key in. Can I order a short 19mm "spark plug" type socket which can be used with a spanner ?
If so who makes them and what the correct term.

Cheers Mark A

Thumbs up

Take the struts to a garage and get em to whip the topmount nuts off using their air impact guns, takes seconds and no need to compress the springs (if you are brave!).

Refitting is the reverse of removal

I buy a socket and weld a bar to the side that allows me to still use the allen key.

I suppose if you have no welding equip this is of no use to you whatsoever!!

Ho, hum )-:

PS No I'm not doing any more either. My old fellas garage is full of home made tools and they dont fit into tool boxes!!!

Mark, would you believe I used a simple ring spanner and the allen key to do mine!
Probably better is to buy a cheap 'box' spanner, the type made from steel tube. Cut it down to a length where the allen key can reach the strut ok, and then weld a bar to the box tube at 90 deg to the tube itself, so making a wrench of the tube. Once it is loosened off, with the spring compressed, the nut will come off easy (use WD40 too) and so the top mount. Sometimes home made is best! You will need the same tool for the rears if you dare go there while the strut is in the body....

If you are trying to take the top mounts off.... i just undid the nut slightly while the strut was on the car (not jacked up). The weight on them made the rod stay put so it became loose nice and easy.

I always do the same as POC, take it to a tyre place and ask them (£5.00 if you dont drink in the same pub) to put the airgun on it. The 'ratcheting' effect of the gun shocks loose the nut from the strut and undoes it.

To save time you can wire up the spring so that the end cap does not fly accross the road.
