spring rates
hi
i have a set of coilovers in my car but the springs are too hard, i think they are something like 100/80 rated!! i was looking on some of the older threads and see that 60/40 or 50/40 would be a good rate for road use, i asked the supplier for springs and he said he needs to know the rate in kg/mm. is 50/40 the ideal rate for road use and if so what is this in kg/mm? thanks guys

100/80 is dangerous on the road, just too stiff. The car must be terrible ride on B roads?
50/40 is a great rate. I have tried 50/40 then 60/50 and back to 50/40.
I know several people who have done this. Some go even softer, 40/30..
The units are awkward, iirc in Kg/mm the rates are 5/4?!
If your supplier is a real spring man he will be able to get the right spings to you as diameter and free length are equally important.
If you know the make of coil-over, find a subaru independent who sells them and get the 50/50 from them.

I sourced my springs seperately for my coilovers, went for 70/40 in the end (got 80/60 for track work) but might drop lower if they are still too stiff (dampers have 26 settings, set to 7/7 rear & front for roads but need to get the setup tweaked when I get my geometry done).
Your coilovers should use standard spring sizes, usually have the size printed on the springs otherwise you will need to measure them up and then source some replacements springs.
I got mine from these guys: Subaru WRC Spares - Home
