Strange Front End Carcking Sound

Strange Front End Carcking Sound
Guys,
Problem with my car I knew the shocks were stuffed and had them replaced a while ago with second hand ones with money been tight at that time.
While driving slowly, turning left and right and especially going over speed humps or potholes I am getting a very loud cracking type noise. The shocks and strut tops were replaced and all seemed well for a few days but again same problem.
The car just doesn't seem trustworthy and I'm constantly worried about turning or going over speed humps that something is going to fall off.
Also noticed that my front tyres outer and inner edges are bald.
I have the car booked in at HDC Subaru in Hebden bridge on 21/04/08 but just wondered if any of you guys have any idea what the problem might be.
I'm about to order some new alloys and tyres but want the front end sorting before they go on for sure.
Thanks

You could try some diagnostics yourself with a mate. At standstill, turn the wheel fully one way. Get your mate to slowly turn the wheel and have your hand on the front spring. It should be nice and smooth. If you feel it binding or suddenly jumping (ie catching up with the twist in the strut), then I would suspect the top mount bearing is dry. You say you've had them replaced but which bit?
Bold tyres on the inner and outer edge indicates underinflated tyres but again, is this something that has happened together or was the inner edge wear due to the old shocks and then shock replacement buggered the geometry causing wear on the outer edge for instance. Always difficult to diagnose over the net so I reckon as you say, best bet is to get it to the specialist for a full check out.
