Common problem on NEWAGE sti's indeed.....
There are two types of classic STi rear shock, most are the normal type (thin stem rising from the middle) some are inverted (thick stem) the latter are similar to newage and may suffer the same problem.
Otherwise...
check the rear top mount nuts, and centre nut, jack up and check the strut bearing by trying to tilt the wheel in and out at the top.
