Default what does preload do

Quick question, what does the preload adjuster do on a set of coilovers (I'm guessing it preloads the spring, so less travel on the spring itself). My rear coilovers bang when i hit big holes, so I would guess i need to bring the preload down a bit so its got more compression available (if that sounds correct)

cheers chappies

adding preload TRIES to squash the spring more - however in effect it will RAISE the car slightly which WILL give more available suspension travel

(the spring will only compress as much as the weight of the car can compress it)
