Default Impreza Suspension Despair!

Hi, I'm really hoping one of you guys on here may be able to help with advice on my wifes impreza. It's a 2000 Classic shape wagon Sport. The best way to describe it is that it's like driving a car with cross ply tyres and knackered shocks along a tramline! The problem is worse on a rough road or under braking, when driving along it's as if it's got a mind of it's own and the wheels wander all over the place. On a smooth flat surface it's not too bad. We've had 3 different mechanics look at it all to no avail. We've had the alignment / geometry checked and on the last mechanics recommendation, the front wishbone bushes replaced with polyurethane ones as he said they were worn, it has made no difference whatsoever. The is no obvious play in any of the suspension or steering. It's fitted with 17" wheels which it had when we bought it, but the problem was not present then. It's covered 82000 miles. She loves this car but to drive it's horrid and if we cant resolve it it's gonna have to go. If anyone can offer and advice it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil.

Can you borrow a set of wheels with decent quality tyres on ?
Is it a steering problem, worn rack bushes ?

hi m8 check the rear wishbone bushes on the front wishbones ,that the large alloy blocks bolted to the chassis ,the bush is oil filled and may look ok but when put under road conditions they slap about allowing wheel movement back and forward
hope this helps

hi, thanks for your responses. it's had new tyres since the the problem started. also swapped the rear wheels to the front, no difference. it's had new brake discs and all the front wishbone bushes replaced. i think i'll take the recommendation of getting it looked at by an expert, so recommendations for someone near coulsdon / croydon surrey. much appreciated

Hi mate take it to Cheam Motors ( Subaru Dealer) They are in Ewell Its about 20 minutes for you, Ask for Colin they will test drive and look at the car for you with out cost
If they do find the fault you can normally come to an arrangement with the price they should be able to match specialist prices.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
