Default STI 2006 rear shocks

Just noticed a rumbling coming from the driver side rear shock
I have already had the other side replaced under warranty but now it has run out so I was wondering what my options are? I can not afford a new set of coil covers yet, I know that would be the easiest option but can you buy an after market shock on its own at a good price ? plus anybody know how much one from Subaru would be ?

Shocks should really be replaced in pairs. Not want you want to hear, but that's for safety sake. My main dealer was reluctant to change both mine under warranty, but agreed when I raised the safety question at 10k.

Regrease them as per various threads already posted.

I know now that I should of been a little bit more persistent when they changed the other side, but the dealer told me that Subaru will only change the shock that's faulty so I took his word for it

Cheers Simon I will take a look back, do you know if this regressing can be done with everything still in place IE shocks and springs?
I do realise that the wheel will have to come off !!

You have to remove the shock and strip it to re-grease it.

...and it was a pointless excercise in my case, the strut started making a noise again after 2 weeks.
Bin the lot and get aftermarket shocks.

What grease did you use, 5 months on and my (sticky red waterproof grease) shocks are still silent, fronts now need doing though!

Its not a guarenteed fix, but for about £20 and 2 hours times its worth a shot!

Can I not just buy 1 after market shock that will match the others ? As I do not have the money to replace all

I think that KYB make the OEM shocks for this car.
As far as I know, they also make replacements for it, a lot cheaper too.

The UK distributor is here:
KYB – The world's largest manufacturer of shock absorbers

Why not give them a try?

Thanks mate I have just left them a Email,
I was reading some of there technical and they quote that you must change shocks as a pair!! How come Subaru would only change the noisy one on my car have they done something wrong that has caused the other side to become faulty

You don't really want a bad one with a good one, although this does not seem too unusual on the STI.
Both my rear ones only lasted about 15K miles before they started to knock. I put up with it until about 26K miles, then they were changed by the dealer (as a good will gesture outside warranty). One of the replacements knocked from new. Rubbish really.

Thanks you have really inspired me with confidence
I might try and contact the dealer to see if I can get a (good will gesture ) I am also out side of warranty! by a couple of months. If the supplier (manufacturer) is saying you must change as a pair I will try and use that as a bit of ammunition against Subaru.

Its not just your dealership m8. When one of the rear shocks started going on my "out of warranty" Blob eye, the dealership said I would need to replace both. But when the same thing happened on my "in Warranty" Hawkeye I bought to replace it, the same dealership would only replace one. I think its IM policy. Now I've got the knocking again, i'm just putting up with it until i can afford coilovers.
