Unhappy Help me please... I'm on my knees!!

I've completely lunched the motor on my '97 turbo wagon (big end, I think). Do I spend the £2,000 - £3,000 to have it fixed using a brand new Subaru Short Engine, or do I buy something else for the same money and break my beloved Scoob for spares?

Material facts: I love my car. It's in pretty good condition for it's age. It's done about 110k. Getting the money will by nigh on impossible (but I've gotta get it anyway).

Any answers that are constructive, helpful or amusing (no p**s taking, please) will be most appreciated.

Buck, Swansea

Don't think so... I don't wanna go second hand: so it's either strip & re-build with new crank, rods, etc., or brand new short motor with my heads & top end reconditioned. Estimated price is from DRJ in Carmarthen: I've used them in the past - their prices are good and they do a good job... at least if it's got a new motor, I could sell it later if I absolutely had to! I think I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet... I just wondered whether anyone out there had any better ideas!

Ohh... and the moral of story is: "If you want an Impreza to go bang - thrash the 'nads off it and don't change the oil!"

Thanks for that, but I've took the plunge and gone to DRJ this morning... I had to do something 'cause I'm stuffed without a car! The plus point is that I'll have a nice shiny (virtually) new engine when it's done

I think what sammyh means is that they have STi blocks sitting around which have been taken out of new cars to make the Type 25, I think Crist Garner had one of them, can't remember what he paid but I'm sure it was cheap. you could still get DRJ to fit it.
