Disaster on the way home from the meet :(
Did a little bit of a high speed run on the way back from the meet yesterday, no problems, then on slowing down noticed a slight tapping which grew continously worse. Strangely enough if i kept the car on boost it seemed to go, so i decided to nurse it home i was was almost there, and other than a knock warning on the Power FC, there where no dash warning lights illuminated (such as oil pressure etc). Had to stop at 1 set of lights and the car cut out then wouldn't idle, i managed to get it started and pull straight off as i was only half a mile from home by now. As i drove the car the last half mile it was knocking its little heart out but strangely enough when i pulled on my drive it was happy to idle although still knocking. Any ideas peeps, me and a couple of mates have discussed it and they seem to think its either the oil pump has failed or its holed a piston or something. What do you guys think and whats the options for what to do and where to take it? The car is an MY93 wrx JDM Import and i live in Bridgend. I suppose i'm not too upset about it as the car has done over 100,000 miles and its been tuned by a well known tuner to about 300bhp so thats the risk you take tuning older engines. Prob is she's not just my play thing shes my everyday work horse so i need to get it done ASAP.

Cheers guys, but its gonna be a bottom end job. Whats the best thing to do, get mine rebuilt or buy one already done with uprated components? Don't wanna get a second hand 1 as most of the expense is gonna be labour anyways so may as well get it done properly first time. Seems the big end bearing has gone, was thinking new set of pistons, group A head gasket new oil pump to be on the safe side. Who would you recommend, Andy from Ace motorsport perhaps? I've heard good things about him. Any suggestions? More gutted about being carless than anything.

Ye its bad and its coming from the bottom end. I suspect its the big end bearing. Looks like a bottom end rebuild, but need to know if its gonna be cheaper to rebuild my existing bottom end with uprated parts or just buy a new one from a motorsport company already built with uprated parts. Don't want anything for massive power, just something that will run about 350bhp all day, something rated to about 400bhp, so i've got a safety margin. I can't really complain, she's done over 100k's and is used everyday.

Call me Monday, we can sort you out with something either standard or uprated.
Tough luck on breaking it though.

The original oil pump is a fine piece of kit, that is maligned unnecessarily, in my opinion.
In well over 1000 engine rebuilds we have only ever had to buy 5 new pumps. And those only due to debris damage on the gear faces, nothing to do with sticking relief valves.
We simply take the original to pieces and clean it thoroughly, polish the reflief valve to a high shine to deburr it and off they go again.
They make excellent pressure as-is and we don't have any worries about what and how we do it.
The RCM one is also a fine bit of kit, if it makes you happier to buy that, then feel free. We have only ever fitted 3 or 4 of those and that is usually because the customer has called me to discuss before spending hard earned. OR has bought it before he gets to me.
