I had a similar problem with my RA and a local MOT garage told me to take the car for a short drive and not to go above 3rd gear at about 4 to 5k rpm for about 5 mins to get the exhaust really hot.

I then took it back in and got it tested straight away and it passed.

Hmm, something wrong there then.

Faulty O2 sensor in downpipe possibly, thus giving false readings to the ECu making it abit of a rich mixture.

Bung the guy £20 to turn a blind eye ?

On a sensible note, I had the same problem. It turned out to be a faulty sensor.

Its the same thing, sorry.

Halfords use to sell these for about £15, I think it was the Bosch L300 O2 sensor.

im matt, lol, i tested the car in for for daz today, and it way off. the exhaust on his car is cuurently mine. which i had no issues with, but it may av broke down on my car but i havent re tested with it so dont know.

i fitted a new lambda sensor onto daz car but that made no diff.
iv checked for power to the sensor and thats all fine.
so conclusion is from print outs from machine cats r knackered.

on the 96 impreza, how many lamda sensors where there, one or 2, and the exhaust i fitted on to daz car was from a 98. i cant see that being a issue unless the early cars had 2 sensors?

looking if possible to borrow a exhaust to fit, and re test emissions. trying to troubleshoot best possible for daz before it starts costing money if the problem isnt cats.

Both the early and late classic have 1 Lambda sensor and 1 "Cat on fire" sensor. The only difference being the early car had the lambda sensor positioned in the headers and the later car having the sensor positioned in the downpipe.
If the car is running a standard map, fitting an after market VTA dump valve has been known to make the car run rich, but this will only be while on throttle.

After some reading through old posts on here, a guy said that 95 and below imports do not require advanced emissions tests only a standard one and dont require a cat either is this true?

Today the CO was at 1.5% so i will be ringing vosa tomorrow and giving the phone to the tester and he should then test it as a non cat car limit which it 3.5% so it will fly through

they havent fitted it yet ozz. still my original on there. that system xpains ur mot emissions.

must b a o2 sensor on headers. if a 98 will pass with it, im sure a 95 will providing all sensors are working in in place.

Phoned Vosa up and they say to have non cat emission you need to get proof that your car was built before july 95 and if you dont it needs full cat... ive had a good look through the stuff we got for the car and all i got is the register date which is november

I also phoned the people thats stamped on the log book and they looked in their records and all they have for the car is the chasis number and engine and that the car is green...

Dont know what to do now do i spend out more replacing parts and hope it passes? or how would i get proof that it was built before july 95

Help please!
