Question Track car advice please!

Myself and a mate are considering getting our hands on a classic turbo as a dedicated track car but there are a few details i need to check first.

I have somewhere it can be kept off the road and worked on but im not sure where i stand with insurance, tax and MOT.

So, does a track car stored off the road need any kind of tax?
Does it need any sort of insurance?
Does a track car need an MOT?
And if it doesnt need any of the above can it be towed on the road or will it need to be on a trailor?

Finally, my budget is only up to £1500, which i know will get me a classic both standard and modified, but will it live long or am i better off spending less on a pug 205 or something simular?

I think thats it!
Cheers,
Ian

Ian,
I think a lot of it depends on which track, I was never asked for anything at LLandow. Good luck with your project

With rallying they only need to be MOT's for single venue places like Pembrey ect , its onlywhen you do a rally with road section does it then need taxing and insuring.

You dont need Tax and insurance to keep a car unless it is kept or used on the road , you can sorn it to keep the tax people happy

My rally car hasn't been used on an event with road mileage for about 5 months so I sorn'd it . got to tax it begining of feb for the wyedean though.

I could be wrong but not sure if you could get away with towing it to and from events , I see people taking there cars to rallies on a dolly but you couldn't use one of thos as it will bugger your centre diff up , but you can hire trailers by the day from various places , costs aboout £50 a day

With a budget of the size your talking about, IMHO I would be looking to go into part shares with some else, and start of with either a pug or nova/corsa, and first and for most a roll cage is a must (for your own safety) as you said this will be a dedicated track car.

Regards, John

So, does a track car stored off the road need any kind of tax? - NO
Does it need any sort of insurance? NO
Does a track car need an MOT? NO - but must be MOT standard, basically it has to be safe for yourself and others on track, no bangers.
And if it doesnt need any of the above can it be towed on the road or will it need to be on a trailor? No, I tried that. Basically I was told by the police and DVLA that if you have any 2 wheels on the road it needs a MOT not so much TAX.

Hope that helps.

Like John said, for a small budget, you'd have more fun in a 205 like my old one, which was a match to some high powered cars on some certain tracks.

Cheers for the info gents, its been a big help. Thanks for the honesty too, i thought i may be getting ahead of myself a little wanting a scoob on £1500. I just have to decide on going with something different or pushing up the budget, but if i do it will be off the cards for this year probably. Decisions decisions!!

As an alternative to the usual 205, why not take a look at the Mk2 Honda CRX 1.6 16v. I'm running one as a track day car and while it's not that fast down the straight, it's an excellent car in the twisties.

The Corsa could be a bit of fun for a few quid, even if it only lasts 5 months. I still dont know what to do for the best??!

I'd be tempted buy Dylans offer if he'll do you a deal on the shell and the C20XE engine Ian. That'll be a little flyer. I had a GSi Cav before the scoob, which had the C20XE engine, and that didn't hang about despite being a heavy car. The Red Top is an awesome engine and still used a lot by the Caterham gang, so tuning parts are readily available.

Still undecided as to what i am going to do. I am still tempted by a scoob but the budget is limited so if something goes wrong i will struggle to put it right. Dylan, the Corsa sounds like it could be a good idea, but my mechnical ability/experience is limited so popping an engine into a shell wont be that easy for me if i could do it at all. How far alone is/was your project and what would you say is left to get it track ready?
