Need MY97 turbo serviced - considered using the Abergavenny Dealer.
Any problems with using this garage or do you have a contact name/number of any other scooby specialist in the south wales area (newport - monmouth area)
Cheers

Their hourly rate is considerably less than the Cardiff dealer charges. Having said that I wasn't entirely happy with the bill I was landed with when I used them. The time it took them (and hence the amount charged)to sort my problem seemed a mite excessive. Thing is it's impossible to judge how much I would have forked out had I used CVC.

i had my 97 serviced at cvc, great but slow, had my p1 done at swansea last time, could hear them revving it to listen to exhaust and then they took it for a road test, wont be going back there, booked in to cvc week after next, just going to make sure the washer bottle is full before i leave

Hehe - just had a free service from CVC!
They mistakenly done a 7500 mile service instead of the free 1000 mile lube service on MY97 (new engine due to piston slap).
Refunded the lot (including washer bottle top up

How much did the new engine cost?
I also have a 97 version - I hear alot about the Piston Slap problems on this age car.
Can someone explain what to look out for - is a new engine the only solution.

hi richard
glad i sold the red 97 then, they made a mistake with my first free service when i bought the car, did a full service, ie all fluids and plugs, offered to charge me for just the minor service, then i told them it was the free service they said came with the car, i take it they replaced the engine under the 1 yr warranty you had with it ?

Mark - yes it was done on the warranty (thank goodness), had a new clutch fitted at same time for no labour charge ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Ronny they didn't give me an exact figure but quoted saving £3-£4K by having warranty!!
I started noticing the problem in the cold winter mornings when I could here an almost diesel like noise for the first minute of start up, other than that no other symptoms - car was running very well.
When they stripped the engine apparently the gudgeon pin on one of the pistons had seized causing wear in the bore.
Done a bit of reading on the subject of slap when I suspected the problem and the jury is out regarding whether its anythng to worry about and worth getting fixed. Some other makes of car are actually designed to slap to allow for piston expansion when engine is warm.
If you do find you have it and decide to get it fixed try ringing scoobysport, they can fix it for around £800.

****.
I have noticed when I start the car up it sounds like a diesel engine for approx 2mins - until the temp gauge needle starts to come up.
If it is Piston Slap I will feel pretty pissed off as I bought this car from a non-Subaru dealer, but paid the local subaru dealer to do a full appraisal of the car. They said the car was A1 ( 8 weeks ago )
I have a non-Subaru warranty, but I bet the buggers will not want to pay for it.
Are there any others signs to show you have Piston slap?
I better pop my car into Subaru and get them to check it out.
**** **** bugger, panicccccccccccccc.

Ronny,
Sorry to hear that you may have slap - keep your fingers crossed, it may be something else.
Unless you know what to look for it is very difficult to spot a slapper (so to speak), I had to leave my car at dealer overnight for them to check it as it only occurred the first start of the day.
I used to have a WAV file of a car that had slap, if i find it i'll e-mail to you.
Also, if the bores are not too bad the pistons can be replaced for a lot less than a short engine (think thats what scoobysport do).
Good luck
Rich

had my p1 serviced at cvc today, yes they did charge for screen wash , even though i filled it before i left, they said they had put a sachet in, i doubt it, expensive this time, i had the 7.5k service in swansea, £87.76, 15k today, £168.10
took the sti for a test thrash whilst there, its not bad, brilliant brakes, good gearbox, far slower and more lag than my p1, not too keen on the front lsd either
i will hang on to the p1 for a bit longer
