Smoke through the airvents !???

Smoke through the airvents !???
Travelled to London Friday,and i'd been on the motorway doing 75-80 for about ten minites and as it was warm i had the air con on.
All of a sudden white smoke was coming through the vents.!!!!!!!!!
No lights on dasboard and the smoke did not smell of oil,water or exhaust. Puzzled was i..
Turned off the aircon and smoked stopped instantly,so cause confirmed but no signs of cause detected at the next services ?????
Anyone had this or got an idea why !

Yep had that on my old classic, lotsa white acrid smoke from the air-con motor, mine used to screech too !! adding to the fun - kept it disconnected and was all OK then, no aircon mind

That gas was probably the refrigerant gas which I believe is R134, it does sound like you need a new compressor if the gas is getting into the system.
