Better panel filters are an option.
But don't forget about stopping. Older Classics have ****e two pot fronts but can be uprated with later 4 pots. Shocks as well, these will help with getting power down and speed through corners. Combined with some decent ARB's and new bushes it will transform the car.
Try Jolly Green Monster who does new ECU boards for the earlier versions, your looking at £525 + to get more go.

As said above, concentrate on braking and handling. Set of 4 pot fronts and coilovers and ARB's. You will be surprised how much better the car drives. Unfortunately us early classic drivers are a bit short on mods if we dont have an aftermarket ECU

I'm far from a expert on tunning a Impreza, but when i start to try and up the power on mine, heres what i'm going to get
*Full free flowing exhaust with de-cat
*panel filter(already got a green cotton)
*Walbro 255lph intank fuel pump
*fuel pressure reg
*Front mount intercooler
*Set of decent NGK plugs(Have been advised to use PFR 7B)
*550cc injectors
* ESL remap, saying that for the sake of a extra 300quid i'd go for a standalone Simtek ECU
And maybe a late classic map sensor.

Ok thanks for the input i can see there is no cheap way so im thinking of keeping it how it is until my tax and mot runs out then pull her off the road for a while as im getting a respray and re-do my engine from the bottom up.Atleast this way i can spend the necessary money.
Thanks again
