Buying a used turbo is always a risk, are you looking to buy second hand or a new unit?

The VF34 would be a good upgrade depending on what you have fitted now, if it's one of the VF2* series of turbo then yes I would definitely change it for one of the VF3* series.

There isn't really a massive difference between the VF34 & VF35 except for the compressor housings and the VF34 uses a roller bearing for the impellor shaft whereas the VF35 uses a divided thrust bearing. The VF34 will spool earlier than the VF35 and having had an Impreza with a VF34 fitted I can say that it's a really good turbo.

At the moment it has bigger injectors, fuel pump etc the vf34 sounds good but not cheap at £1000 plus remap, How about a vf43?

Another good turbo and they achieve good results, it was designed for the 2.5 litre engine so might be a laggy on a 2 litre engine, but if Antony is mapping the car he could 'work' his way around this.

You need to be careful of second hand VF4* single scroll turbo units as they can crack around/inside the exhaust outlet, and although it wouldn't massively effect performance it doesn't do it any favours either.

Either between the vf35 or vf43, would go for the vf34 but cant seem to find one, hard to come by.

What kind of power do you think the car would achive with the VF 34 turbo and with 550 Injectors and a bigger fuel pump?

Anywhere from 310-340bhp, a lot depends on how good your engine is plus you don't want to go much more or you'll be stressing your gearbox (assuming you still have a 5 speed) even then you could be on borrowed time.

It'll be the TY754 box so they're a bit stronger than the earlier ones

But even then it's a gamble as earlier newage 5 speeds can give up at around 340bhp and they are stronger than the later classic gearboxes.

A lot of it is to do with how you drive and how much mechanical sympathy you show.

I believe the later 754 DCCD box will handle 400bhp no worries, as long as you're not launching it to pop down the shops it'll be fine! I had to get rid of mine as I'm aiming for 450+ so 6 speed is the way forward!

I think you're on borrowed time if you run a classic or newage 5 speed box to that level, it's not BHP that will kill the gearbox it's the torque.

A Type R is 276bhp out of the box, sometimes it'll be more if the 2.0 is still in there and you get it to 400 ish bhp then torque will be about 360ish, that's not gonna kill it!

Martyn's MY00 WRX 2.1 that was running 550bhp was on the standard box, not many road miles but launch after launch at Shakespeare, it finally went... on the Dyno ! Madness

The main reason Im going for a 6 speed is my R one had the shorter 5th gear, very annoying on long drives

Don't go throwing anything away there... why not just swap like for like why upgrade ?
Also worth looking on Andy Forrest site as he does part exchange turbo's where he rebuilds and upgrades. What have you fitted there is it the standard one still ?
I know your car it's been sat on my driveway at one point a few years back as Si is a mate of mine. For the use your giving the car and the age of the car I would not go mad on a power trip consider like for like and enjoy the car for what it is now it's the best budget way around it because trust me these guys on here will tell you some people have got caught up and spent thousands literally unplanned after getting carried away.

What actually has happened there to the car ?

The standard turbo was on the car yeah... had boost problems so when they removed pipework they noticed oil there. Orderd the vf34 now from a guy on here it was on a rb5 440cc injectors and sti top mount mapped by rob rawly 335bhp with 335 ft lb.

Cant go wrong with a VF34
Slightly bigger than the VF35, but has roller bearing core so doesn't lose much spool up (if any) over the VF35....
I thought it was normal to have a small amount of oil in the intercooler pipe work

If it was a price thing i would think a recon would be a little cheaper by the time you consider buying the newer turbo plus the remap aswell.

You will not be disappointed with the turbo you have ordered . Done a lot of work for that guy and can guarantee it's low mileage and well looked after as in warmed before use and allowed to cool after use. I'm running a very similar set up to Maz all be it a VF35 I am running and producing 335bhp and 340 FT LB.
