I work in the motor trade and there's lots of mixed comments about LPG conversions, the main one being that LPG doesn't contain many lubricating properties whereas petrol does, a lot of people say once they have had the conversion done they usually live with the engine light on lol, I'm going back three years ago so may be a little better now.... I work with trucks instead of cars now so not sure if its got any better!

yes I also hered about the lube problem I phoned for a quote from one place and they said as an optimal extra is this oil tank that feeds a special lube in with the gas to protect the valves and what not but is very expensive so I'm not sure If it is going to be worth it to LPG it as
pros
fuel will be cheaper witch means I'll be able to drive more

cons
I will lose the boot space
extra oil is very expensive
car will weigh more
possibility of exploding if rear ended !!

Unless your doing an awful lot of miles, the nigh on £2k it costs to have a good quality system professionally fitted, it takes a fair few tank fills to recoup the difference in cost between LPG and petrol, add to the equation the lower calorific value which = less miles on gas and it's a bit of a mine field trying to work out the break even point so as to know exactly when you actually begin saving money in real terms.

Then there is the possible damage to the engine, especially with a subaru.

I view it a bit like diesel cars, in that break even is around 100k miles on the petrol equivalent, before you take into account things like dmf, dpf, and injector failures all of which cost an absolute fortune to fix and mostly occur before 100k.

So you pays your money and takes your choice.

Not worth the risk for a saving that will probably never happen IMHO.

I do a lot miles is the only reason I ask about LPG
I love driving and love my cars just trying to see if I can do something I love a little cheaper

This might set the cat among the pigeons but as I see it this suggestion serves the same purpose ie. cutting fuel costs.

Why not just map it for 20% Meth and buy that in 1000 litre amounts?

WAIT EVERYONE (no naked flames especially).

The point is this - cost saving = around 60-70p per litre.
That's £7-8 per fill-up, so the OP is guaranteed approx 8-10% lower fuel costs.
The cost for achieving these savings is a remap, far less than the £2K or so for LPG conversion.

As for the LPG cons:

*no loss of boot space
*no extra oil
*no extra weight
*no increased danger in a rear shunt.

However, Methanol cons:

*Storage - you'd probably have to have an approved shed, bunker(!) or whatever.
*Handling - you'd need a 10-litre jerry can full of Meth when you fill up at the petrol station, and you'd have some strange looks when you pour the stuff in wearing goggles, an airfilter and gloves.

Apart from the latter consideration doesn't the Meth alternative seem to be the far better proposition?

This post isn't intended as a mickey take.

But does it put the idea of lpg conversion and why you want to do it in perspective?

I have done this, the saving isn't a great deal but the hassle of filling the car with meth and fuel is.
you get some odd looks at the petrol station filling the tank with meth from a jerry can then fuel.
but you get more power
