You can also use an ECU from an RS Legacy up to 93 as well, they are the same sensors and pin's except for one which drives the water cooled intercooler on the legacy (blank pin in socket for WRX wiring connectors)...
And the big advantage is that they are cheaper to get chipped as they take a more commonly available eprom chip..the single chip originally used in WRX's is no longer available and so manufactures have had to develope a twin chip board that plugs in to the 28 pin socket..hence they can charge what they like because it's hard for people to copy the chip ;-)
If you go this road then the face lift legacy uses wrx style ecu but the earlier 89 model uses an ecu that has the more available and easily copied chip.
