The concern is a new filter (of an oiled type - like the K&N etc) can bgger the MAF, as oil from the filter can gunk it up (i.e. they ar eoiled form teh factory - so they trap dirt and hence filter the air....). The filter I've got is two years old and so not still soaked in filter oil so should be ok...!

Sorry for the thread hijack mate, but i want to know what MAF is "safe" to run an induction kit?
Ive also got a MY98 UK wagon thats currently got a HKS induction kit fitted to it and if having that fitted will break the crappy pain in the **** Impreza engine then im gonna take it off and fit a standard air box and panel filter!

98-00 cars often had the hotwire MAF which is the weak one. In truth, unless you're looking into FMIC and different ECU set-up's then an I/K will get you pretty much sod all except noise, and so are a waste of money. Vibration and oil contamination is what does the deed. Many people with cars from that era simply do an ECU reset every 3-6 months to see if the MAF throws up a fault code, and/or replace the MAF with the annual service. A lot of hassle for something which give little/no performance benefit IMHO. Stick with the excellent OE intake set-up for trouble-free reliability.

Chuffin brilliant!
Ive currently got FMIC fitted but im saving up for an ECU and re-map.
Is it possible to re-fit the standard air box if ive got a FMIC fitted? As the pipework goes through the inner wing where the air box lives.

Haha thanks for that mate!
Now im stuck between a rock and a hard place, because i was also told that because i have a FMIC i need to get an aftermarket ECU fitted before my engine goes BANG!!!
And i was also told to remove the induction kit and fit the standard air box and panel filter before my engine goes BANG!!!

Not 'just an air filter', an induction kit. Just a Green or K&N filter would be fine, although don't expect any more power out of them either. I/K's are known to have oily elemants which can contaminate MAF's, have poorer filtration which is again a worry, but the main trouble is the vibration they introduce which shakes the delicate MAF to bits. They generally fail gradually, allowing the ECU to adapt to the failing component rather than a sudden failure which the ECU detects and alerts you of. As a result the engine starts to run lean which causes DET, overheating in the cylinders and meltdown. The OE intake and filter is good for over 350bhp, so most people are wasting money making tuning companies rich when they foolishly buy these, along with the other idiots mod, a dump valve !
