my mrs has the first one without the keyboard and loves it,
very light and usually a full charge can last over 1 month with her reading it for 4hrs a day.mind and turn the wifi off of you will only get 1 wks use from it,
she looked at the newest one with the keyboard but she said it reminded her of a computer so didnt get it,
hope this helps

Hi Rob,
My 10yr old has the basic one (no kbd & no 3G) and here are our conclusions:-
No keyboard makes it very frustrating when searching for words, books etc in the kindle store or even putting in password.
The Kindle will act as a web browser (albeit not very advanced) so with the free 3G it is a handy portable browser, especially on your hols :-) but basic Kindle only has wifi.
However-
Touch screen version is just available so that is definately worth considering as it only costs a bit more than the basic, better battery life, audio, and other stuff.
Hope that helps :-)
Cheers,
Adrian.

Not strictly true, download a programme called calibre to your PC which will put pretty much any ebook on your kindle.

i brought the wife the Kindle 3 from Amazon She loves it and finds it well easy to use
really wouldn't go for any of the advanced 1's with keyboards etc as the ipad will cover the other needs , also don't get to carried away remember that it's only meant to read books
Also you don't need to buy books from amazon plenty places online to get em
