I was to busy laughing to take note..just remeber the look on his face as I shot past...can be seen in the dictionary under sour puss

Caught me off guard too as the dozy bint driving it was coming the other way, on my side of the road doing her bloody make-up. And yes, I do know she was doing her make up because she close enough for me to see quite clearly, before she noticed my main beam+PIAAs and me leaning on the horn.
She almost had to put her lipstick down as she swerved back onto her carriageway [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

What always worries me about the fashion for making off roaders perform like sports saloons is whether they are actually safe enough to handle all the power, sounds like the X5 can certainly deliver the traction, the electronics can sort out the grip etc to a certain extent but what about stopping the thing or controlling all that weight if the electronics can't cope and it gets out of shape? Are the brakes as good as the rest of the drivetrain?
Eventually laws of physics must come into play and mass, C of G and tyre contact areas are all impervious to electronic intervention at the end of the day.
I am not having a go, this is a genuine question of interest, its one that often crosses my mind when I see a Forester Turbo flying down the outside lane of a motorway, pushing up the rear bumber of a fast saloon car. I know the saloon could stop pretty quick but what about the Forester?

In answer to Catalunya 051 - I will quite happily pit my X5's conering and stopping abilities against an Impreza any day.. and have done on many occasions - Bristol being just one of them...
And just for your info, my 4.4i goes on Monday and my new 4.6i arrives, bigger power, bigger brakes, bigger grip and an even BIGGER problem for the scooby world....

"Ye cannie change the laws of physics", although BMW will have a bloody good try ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
A couple of months ago, the missus and I were over in Ireland seeing some friends, and as part of the trip we drove at a good pace from Dublin to Cavan (about 80 miles on twisty country roads) in a X5 4.4i. It was impressive but at the good speeds we were doing, however the Scoob would have been far more comfortable and confidence inspiring. The missus got car sick and she never does in the Scoob.
If you're not going to go offroad, might as well buy a 7-series instead
. I've been looking at a 97R 740i (same engine as the X5) for £12K.

X5MAN, the 4.6 isnt much of a problem for the scoobyworld ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
and the fact that it weight's in at nearly 1000kg over a classic scoob and it has the aerodynamics of an even bigger brick than any Impreza
i wont be worried ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Oh and courtesy of evo mag, the 4.4i takes nearly 22 secs to get to 100mph, 15 secs in a classic and 18 in a wrx, the 4.6 may be more interesting but id bet its not going to be under 20 secs![Stick Out Tongue](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif)

X5 Man ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
This is what scares me most. Somebody earlier in the thread mentioned the laws of physics etc.....
Not debating the fact that your brakes etc stop you quickly but NOT that quick. Think top gear did a slot on this a few years ago when they compared the braking distances of a porsche 911, some kind of land rover and a few other medium priced saloons, think the land rover fell off the edge of the earth before it stopped.
You'll end up safe
but god help the 15 cars in front of you when your X5 gently caresses their ****.
"With increased power comes responsibility" and that quote really should apply to weight.
Not slagging the X5 or you just take a bit of care as the laws of physics can't be beaten easily![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Safe driving ...... please![Confused](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/confused.gif)

interesting debate..going to kill the stopping debate now!!
The top gear test had a 911 and a landrover discovery not the best stopper in the world. The X5 stops very very quickly, the combination of lots of rubber and big **** off discs will pull it form a ton down to 40 in no time..The braking inspires confidence at speed, the most difficult thing is that it doesnt feel like it should handle or brake that well..but believe me once you get used to the thing it is fun...and there is no way it takes that long to get to 100mph. X5 man and I have done some very scientifc testing ...taking the old severn bridge toll booths as the start point until you cross the metal strip that marks the start of the bridge..from a standing start I get about 5mph more over the line in my scoob. Sit in one and you will change your mind..trust me

Tazman,
take into consideration that the X5 is a brick (has a drag co-efficiency of 0.38) and its 2180kg (my scoob is 1245kg) and the 4.4 has 286bhp (mine has over 250bhp as its a PPP'd car
) and given that my power to weight is over 200bhp per tonne to that of 133bhp per tonne i know which one is quicker ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Now i quite happily outpace the old E36 M3's (non evo) with the same BHP and less weight, ive also wasted a 4.4 on the motorway who wanted to make love to my back bumper (just floored it in 5th, poor sod couldnt keep up even though they were trying
) but alot of cars will be slow (just look at hot hatches, quick to 60, pretty slow to 100) so this would have the same done to it.
The X5 is another glorified school delevery vehicle that has no real use except that its big (and id like to see how it fairs in a crash test
)

Tony,
this isn't a anit scoob rant..ask anyone if my scoob was female I would marry it!! All I am saying is that it is a very very suprising car/truck/brick thingy and I am all for power figures (my import wrx wagon rolled off the factory floor with 280bhp as standard) but these things are damn quick...the scoob is faster what I am saying is the differential is not as much as you would expect..on one hand big german ugly lump on the other svelt, beautiful, gorgoues japanese machine (joking by the way...if only she were a women!!). You would think that you would kick *** easily but no.
Where in the NE are you as X5 man nd I are up in York quite often...

Dear all, it is nice to see so many facts and figures about a vehicle you plainly have no idea about...
This vehicle in STANDARD form (something none of you seem to be able to live with) and in the real world (not a technical data sheet) is easily able to keep up with a Subaru (except 0-60 but that means very little on the road) - and in some places surpass it!! I know that this will send a further flurry of scooby patriots running to the flag - but that is a fact guys - live with it...
One further point you guys might want to know, I own an imported Impreza, I am fully aware of their amazing array of talents - and I enjoy nothing more than pushing my car and myself on regular occasions (in controlled circumstances of course - ahem)- but I am also a realist, and I am sorry to have to break this to you all...
SUBARUS ARE NOT THE BEST CARS IN THE WORLD... just a very, very good one..
