Cubley Hall - Comments And Feedback Required
Last night's mid-month run was the first official WYIOC visit to Cubley Hall, near Penistone.
With a decent turn out (for a mid-month event), we should be able to gather some good feedback, thoughts and comments from everyone attending.
So, can we have some incisive, innovative and (err...) intriguing (okay - forget the last one...) comments, views and opinions on this proposed new venue for the WYIOC home?
I'll kick off with the following:-
1. It's in South Yorkshire, which might seem strange for a West Yorkshire-based club, but it remains reasonably accessible for most of the club members and guests. It's also a reasonable distance for other local & regional clubs looking to meet up with us on an occasional basis.
2. The food appears to be well-priced, with a decent menu. Quality seems good, although I'd need to sample more food please to make a proper value judgement.
3. There are some good driving roads from the major routes, although I understand that one or two club members may have got lost on the way back. Never mind - we'll find them at the end of the month....
4. The 'look & feel' of the venue. Personally, I wasn't sure about the Blue Room, even though it was renamed the WR Blue Room for our tenure last night. This room would be too small for a full club meet, and seems slightly isolated from the rest of the pub. Having said that, the conservatory looks promising, as does outside (for those hot, heady summer evenings that are just around the corner ).
5. The overall facilities. Well, there's a big telly, although this seems to show football for some reason. I'm sure it was a genuine mistake, so we'll overlook that for the moment.
6. Speed of service. My baguette arrived on time and without damage . What does everyone reckon?
7. Beer. Well, that's a bit academic for those with a licence but the Pedigree was fine. Lager? What's that? But anyway, I'm sure you can let me know what the stuff was like, as well as any other brewed or fermented beverages
PS. Being relatively local, I know the roads pretty well, so a 235bhp deficit doesn't seem too serious, at least for a couple of miles.

Loved it.
Perhaps, if we asked nicely, they'd take off the footie and play a DVD of a certain driving experience that appears to be getting a fair bit of d/l'ing from Dazza's server a the moment
Pizza was fine, if a little cold by the time I got to the last slice, but that was due to the fact that we were nattering about mg Maestros, Fist 126s, XR2 / 3is, Golfs, Corrados, and what was it Al said he had.... oh yeah, Model Ts
Agreed that the WR blue room would be way too small for an average meet, not to mention hot and stuffy. We could ask them to reserve a part of the conservatory in future, might be worth a try.
Someone could do to try and do a little negotiation for a discount (Al? ) though I wouldn't hold my breath, as it doesn't seem to need the business, if you know what I mean, and a lack of discount would not put me off attending, though it has always been a decent selling point from a membership / subs point of view.
Urinals may be a little to high for some of our *cough* members (over to you, Chris)
I'm sure there's sufficient roads in the surrounding area to vary the drive to / from every month. Recce and OS map required
Not too bothered about it being in South Yorks, we could just petition for a change in boundaries.

Here's my thoughts then <takes deep breath>
The venue itself was lovely, the food good, beer fine however its in south yorkshire(how can WYIOC have a home in south yorkshire????).
I thought the car park was a little small, especially with all the other patrons there - it was quite busy, and there didnt appear to be anywhere to sit outside near the cars.
I didnt see anything for the kids to do(those that have them may want to bring them as and when summer finally arrives) although i may be corrected on that point.
It was too far for Paul and i i'm afraid. The best way for us to get there/back is the motorway and that defeats the object of the drive for us.
I would say all in all that we wont be going again on a regular basis if that is going to be 'home'. Its a great place to meet the south yorks lot and i would make the effort once or twice for an out of area meet but thats all, sorry guys

Hi Steff,
Thanks for the feedback - very valuable. I think that there is (ahem) 'food for thought' in your concerns about distance to the venue for some of our very valued members, and we must take these on board as a club, if we are not to alienate many of our friends.
Personally, while the venue is local for me, the FB was even more handy, and I hear what you say about the merits of a nice drive, rather than merely motorway miles.
I think that we will have to collate some more feedback and comments, then sit down with our active membership for a serious chat on the relative merits or otherwise.
Thanks for coming back to me so swiftly.
Cheers, Chris.

Note to self - ignore right turns out of Hudds from red leader who's on a mission
A good night although we wouldn't want to be in that room again if the TP numbers start turning up and it definitely got a little "steamy" in there - there's tables & chairs outside or one of the more open areas of the place should be OK provided we don't get banned for rowdiness etc
Steph - there's a kids playground round the outside of the conservatory AFAIR from my previous trip as I sat outside
Al, did you see the completely intentional demonstration of blackjax on the way out of the place? It all nearly came to a shuddering halt as I screwed up the disarm twice I'd seen you hanging back a bit so I guess Sticky was explaining the finer points or (having a laugh at my expense )
Chris, if you're going to make it a poll, you'll have a list as long as your arm to cover the options...

Right, the main criticism of Cubley so far seems to be around the distance, which TBH was expected. I have run the TP and CH through my route planner and (avoiding any duck ponds ) from my house it comes out as ; Trading Post is 17 miles taking 23 minutes (straight over M62E), Cubley Hall is 32 miles taking 41 minutes (M62E, M1S to J37, A628W Barnsley Rd).
The obvious advantage to Cubley is the vast amount of really good roads in the area, to which the TP holds no comparison, and the close proximity to S.Yorks and SMACS terratory. Whether you just go straight there and back, or include a spirited run somewhere in the evening, before, during or on the way home, there is much more scope for using the cars instead of just looking at them and talking about them. Is this worth an extra 36 minutes a month
So, does CH become our new home ? Shall we research some more locations and try to find a suitable compromise ? Shall we permanently go bi-monthly, and switch between CH, TP and Buckles to satisfy all of the people some of the time ? With the distances involved we could also consider going north towards Otley/Ilkley to open up the Yorkshire Dales as our playground !

Thank you Dave - balanced & incisive.
As a follow up to Dave's thoughts, do we consider alternating between the TP one month then Cubley Hall the next?
Or does this dilute the core appeal of the club?
Comments please!!!

After some careful consideration I do think Dave's got a brilliant point..
Moving from the TP was always going to affect some people, Bubba & Manda and Dave RB5 to name but two.. It also looks like Paul & Steph will also be affected... it may also affect ad-hoc people turning up from Donny, York and other east side locations...
The TP however, did not have that certain something, namely the roads to and from.... so we still NEED the roads, as this is what our cars are ultimately about...
I can appreciate that 60+ round trip miles starting from North leeds will be a major hinderance to some, as will long journeys where the only way you can get to a meet is on the Mortorway... defeating the object..
The answer seems simple as we do not want to prevent good friends from not being able to attend.. We are a social group too and this is important..
So, why not choose 2-3 locations that can be rotated for the Formal Last Thursday meet? I feel we have one already...
1. Cubley Hall seems perfect as one. Good roads, setting & food. Good access for the South Yorks and SMACS lads to meet up with us.. It was great to meet with them last night and it's always great to meet new people with new ideas and some great cars.. where otherwise we'd miss out..
The other two will need working on.. but what about..
2. Buckles Inn??. Established as a previous venue and easy access for the East Yorks lot.. Not sure about the roads round about it? Anyone?
3. ??????? 3 will mean a 2 month gap and may be a bit too long..
The mid monthers can then be used exclusively to drive to a guest location..
So, will 2 venues give us that freedom to widen our influence and give us the chance not to stagnate? Will it give us the flexibility to be something to as many people as possible?
Personally? I think it will..

Neither of these locations will detract from the mid-month meets, which can be at a variety of locations, as well as offering various themes or events, such as Dave's very successful Dales Run last summer.
Personally, I'm not too certain about including Buckes in our regular rota, as it is firmly into NY territory and, come the winter months, would be less attractive to the core of West Yorkshire based members. As an occasional venue, it's fine, however.
So, having established Cubley Hall on the WYIOC map as a regular venue, do we revert to the TP for the end of this month?
Or, is it Cubley Hall again on the 30th? Or somewhere else known only to The Doctor (that's Al, BTW).

I have nothing against the venue at all. It was a lovely place, its just a tad too far for us. I will come again but it wont be that often thats all. The drive back was amazing, but the drive there was littered with Scams. That is the way is it nowadays with travelling anywhere. We definately need to find somewhere else to have one, alternate months. What about The Sun Inn, at Norwood. There are some awesome roads round there, admittedly its in North Yorks(other side of Otley) but if its good driving you want then you cant beat it. The place is frequented by performance car drivers and bikers and there are no scams in the locality. There is the odd NYP traffic scoob parked up but thats mainly on weekends when the bikers take over. The food is good, plenty of parking and the beer is fab. Just a suggestion

The lack of speed cameras is a plus and if it's an evening doubt they'll be too many plod - besides they're too busy pulling bikers out of hedges on that crazy 'A' Road nearby (whose name eludes me at present).
I did the run up from Otley to Brimham Rocks and it was class....although the Mrs insists it's not right to turn up with a National Trust pass in a Subaru

Some good roads as you say. Unmarked STI8 up there amongst others but they tend to keep on the main road.
I was planning to come to Thursdays meet and mentioned it briefly to Damian (Spen555). Like the others I'm afraid its just too far to travel. By the time you get back its well after midnight and would take me some time to get over there in the first place.
Looks a very nice spot from the pictures though........................

You beat me to it scg-looks like I'm on the same one.
Lol at the golf ***** (Menwith Hill). I think everyone calls them that young and old.
Went to The Sun around three weeks ago and it was busy but it tends to be the weekends and especially Sunday early evening. Saw a lovely MR2 in the ditch a bit further down the road (quite a steep decline) along with his RS500 buddy and Saxo brigade. Made me have a think about my speeds around there.
Went past the Devonshire Arms as well @ Bolton Abbey and there was some sort of Evo/ Supra get together. Looks like they were drawn to the roads there as well.

Maybe we should do a run to check it out. I have been many a time and there is often an impromptu stunt show from the bikers. Can we have some comments please(not disparaging ones ) We will devise a **** hot run round the area for anyone that wants a play? We will incorporate a run past the venue for the spectators(and the photographers), whilst the non-drivers get shedded.
Anyone??????
Anyone??????

I know it well up there Any run must include Greenhow Hill for some high speed fun (remember last weekend Barry ), Burnsall for some twisties and if we have plenty of time we could venture as far as Ribblesdale for a truly stunning fast a-road
Anyone fancy a run out on tuesday evening it being the summer solstace, the longest day of the year and light 'til near 11pm and I've just checked the forecast, sun, sun, sun for a little trip to the Sun Inn

I can't make Tuesday evening, but a recce would be great..
I'm happy to make the journey up, but we'll need some comments from other people from the South of Leeds as to being able to make it as it puts the same constraints (if not a little more) in making the journey on a Thursday night as coming down to Penistone....

Hi guys guess this going to be an unhelpful uncontsructive reply
but a reply none the less.
I'm pretty happy to have a drive out to most venue's but alas with my broken arm I am finding it a little painful to drive at the moment.
Most days i don't finish work till around 1900, so will probably find it hard to meet up early and drive out to these places. What time do the majority of memebers stay at the venue's till. would be a little pointless to drive out to a certain points to find a cloud of dust in the car parks

Mrs Sticky's views, seeing as im the driver in this house, although i was not there Thursday night it sounds like a nice place to meet up I dont know how long it will take for us to get there as I've had no feed back from Mr Legless and I've had to read the threads to find out what went on.
As regards my attendance it will be the end of the month mainly because of the kids and the dogs, the kids get bored far too easily I expect with them being girls and cars not really being there thing and the dogs well i wont leave a pup for longer than 4 hours until he is fully house trained and some of the summer evening runs could equate to more than that.
Can i just add a big thank you for putting up with my OH only 6 months to go and i know he would rather be driving ( i hope )than drinking

Ella - suffice to say that Mr Legless thought it was a nice place.
Thanks for the feedback BTW - I think that your views echo a lot of the group's feelings regarding the meets and venues.
Ta, Chris.

Thanks for your views, dear, but who told you that you were entitled to an opinion?
Right, now I'm back in control of the Sticky PC, my tuppence worth.
Give it six months and I won't give a flying fooooooooooooooooooook where we go. I'd willingly and gladly drive anytime, anyplace, anywhere (can't get away from the drink, can I)
So, in summary. Don't GAF. I'll be there

The way i see it, is that Leeds is out of question. Crap roads and too much traffic. Fair enough. We need somewhere that is a good drive on good roads(no scams) but it needs to be within West Yorkshire. I have a few possiblities but i need to check em out before posting. The Sun is a great drive but nonetheless is in North Yorks. Home needs to be in West Yorks somewhere, after all, we are the WYioc. I want to come to meets as often as i can, so its in my interest to find somewhere suitable, so am taking up the challenge. I will post on here as and when i find somewhere, and you can all decide from there. There will be people not happy with the choice but if the majority say thats home, then thats home. As prev stated by myself, some choices are not for me, but i am not the club. The majority takes the decision. I wont abandon the club ever, but the northern folk need a say so, and that has fallen to me. We need somewhere in the middle so if anyone knows of such a place let us know. Forget the good driving roads, it aint gonna happen in West Yorks. Just need somewhere in the middle with good service and a huge car park, who is willing to take on a car club. I will do the negotiating if someone can nominate somewhere.
