Default Mr Controversial?

OK. Here goes.

I'll be looking to arrange a mid-month meet at the Sovereign pub (only a mile up the road from the Foxglove) on the 18th August.

In order to take advantage of the light nights, a few people have expressed a wish to have a run out, and I think Strines etc will be a good run for those wishing it if the weather stays dry and The Sov will be a good starting point..

The controversial bit is to have a look at the Sov as a whole and to table having the mid month as an official meet ..

The FG was simply superb as a pub (food and interior), but comments have been made (which I agree with) regarding the busy Car park and the fact that all the cars were spread all over. The Murcie was a great attraction and we all congregated around it.. but once we're back to dark nights.. 20 cars in 10 groups of two won't be good..

Now I'm not looking to move, but the management have stated that they can't make an exception for us. I believe they can. IRO 15 people ate and several more had drinks. If we do this twice a month, then I feel that they can make a little effort in reserving a small 3-4 tabled section for us as well as cordoning off a small car park area.. It's not as if we're just using the car park to meet.. we're eating and drinking and bringing in £200+

I hope they will accomodate us as I don't want to have to move.... again. But the Sov was a very close second and wont be too much of an issue to move there if we're 'forced'

Am I being unreasonable?
Am I being picky and elitist wanting a small section of car park and table space????

Al, I haven't been to the FG but it sounds like the management need to have a reality check there.
Anyone with any business sense SHOULD accomodate us.
The cars need to be parked together as much as possible, that's one of the reasons why we meet, to look at and talk about our cars.

Oh except i'll have to park the family Mondeo well away from the Scoobs so as not to lower the tone.......

(BTW, how are the pups?)

Paul.

Al, I can see your point but the FG is obviously working on a commercial basis - if the place was dead / tumbleweed blowing through then I suspect they'd be more accomodating of our "exclusivity" needs but as we saw, that car park was (as good as) full so we're less of a percentage of the total takings for the night.

Secondly, depending upon timings of us getting there, I doubt they'd have a car park attendant turfing non-WYIOC cars out of a designated area prior to us turning up and unless you specify a number of spaces required, then they'll argue that you may be stopping potential non WYIOC customers which isn't good for trade...

Is the other place as full on a likely meet night? Could it be alternative fortnights at each place or are the mid-monthlys just in the lighter nights so not all year round - would there be enough interest to sustain 24 meetings per year plus extra trips to events as and when? I know you mentioned making reciprocal visits to other groups (SMACS, Hull crowd etc) so these would be on a mid-monther night, at a guess...

I agree with what Andy says, they do seem busy enough not to need us that much, and this was the only real concern we had over this venue from day one. We did rationalise that in the winter they'd probably be quieter, but last thursday was bloody awful and they were still busy. I have to wonder if they are as busy on other midweek nights, as traditionally thursdays have always been a takeaway/eat out night, so mon-wed may be a better option. Maybe our local boy could do a recce at 7.30pm each night for a week or the management may confess to having a quieter evening which may suit us better.

The alternative may be to re-open the quest for a venue. I'm up for a mid-monther at The Sov' to ascertain it's suitability, and maybe some more recce runs. The whole situation is I feel starting to drag on, and could well start putting people off now. Numbers have been on the downturn recently, and we really must re-establish some stability to the club if we are to keep people interested and attract new faces.

Excellent points guys. I'm not asking to change, as I'm the last person who wants to see this drag on, I'm just playing Devil's advocate.

I Totally agree with the paradox around the commercial side. Any pub likely to be quiet is probably going to have a few 'issues', where's the FG is busy because of its obvious quality...

If the Sov's location serves the purpose of hosting us for an hour or so as we go for a regular mid month run Strines way, then that sounds great. Especially as it has the garage opposite and a quieter car park to form up in. The FG is unbeatable for it's food, service and welcoming atmosphere, especially as the nights draw in. Those three open fires do sound inviting in Winter...

To me, stability would be The FG for the social last Thursday with the Sov acting as a set-off point for any mid month run. I'd also like to establish the mid month as a regular feature. At the moment it's a little hit and miss and holding both meets at the FG may mean the FG gets a little 'stale'.

So, a mid month meet on the 18th at the Sov to establish that as a set off point for the formal, new and regular Mid month run (which people wish to have). The FG stays as the main meeting venue due to it's undeniable presence and hospitality...

Further comments?

Aye, them were the days. 20 minutes priming the carburettor before cranking slowly then building up the speed.. then getting the driver to press the 'ignite the fuel' button at precisely the right time or it'd be a de-flood and re-charge..

I got through 3 flag walkers before getting the hang od the hand throttle and 3 speed box..

BTW.. Cheeky git
