Question Is it legal?

Is it legal for cops to pull you over for nothing and I mean nothing according to them and cite the reason as:

"your car does not appear to be insured according to our data base"

How would they know if I'm insured or not?

What database did they get this information from?

Wouldn't this be against the data protection act?

I was under the impression that they had to have a valid reason to check your plates out (speeding, not road worthy, it looks stolen that sort of thing) and could not just do it because they feel like it.

Plus when I went to the cop shop at killingbeck with my docs the **** behind the counter was exceptionally rude to the point that if he'd have been in any other shop he would have received a big slap!!

Count 1 yest it is...

The PNC is now linked to the insurance indistries database of registered drivers...
so yes and yes...

no need for them to be rude though...!

I got pulled as well the other night coming out of Leeds in my old man's xantia

Some made up story that I'd jumped the red light across Kirkstall Road which was total BS - got a producer which I sorted at Dewsbury and there's "inconsistencies" in the paperwork. Came out of station and coppers in panda car at side of me blatantly jumped the lights as I made sure they'd been on green for at least a second before moving just in case a second set of them got arsey... (one law for them etc )

Had a word with an "expert" and it now seems to be any alledged "infringement" to stop you even though they aren't allowed to under normal circumstances.

Was told by the ones in the original panda car after an argument as to the events "There's three of us in this car and you'll believe what we tell you."

How the **** should we respect / help them with that kind of attitude - not trying to tar everybody with the same brush but I've now seen examples from "both sides of the coin" - it's abrasive and gets peoples backs up. I know that not all are like this...

/rant over/

Andy

The most likely reason for them to check out your plates is that they were probably checking to see if it was a stolen car, mate. Not all stolen cars are driven around at Mach 1, so even if it`s being driven normally, they are allowed to check it out anyway, as it`s part of their job.

Once they checked it, and there was no insurance showing on the PNC database, you were probably pulled so they could issue you with a ticket to produce your docs, and therefore verify that you were insured.

Unlike yourself mate, not everyone that drives a Scooby is insured, and the Police are well-aware that it costs an arm and a leg for Scooby insurance, so they were probably just doing their job.

I do fully agree though, that there`s no need to be subjected to rudeness, when you attend the Police Station.

Fair play to the guys that pulled me over they were fine when they realised it was a misunderstanding and wires had got crossed at some point. I realise they were doing their job, I would hate to think I was having to deal with an uninsured claim or worse, but you know what it's like when you are doing everything legit and have the pleasure of forking out an arm and a leg every year for the privilege and then someone behind a desk treats you like a piece of scum twocker or something, it tends to grate on the nerves of us decent folk sometimes

Anyway I have since calmed down and shall be revisiting the local station later this week with my docs and a massive smile, I just hope I get the same bloke again

Cheers for the comments

BTW DJ don't feel bad I got ID'd last christmas buying beer from ASDA and I'm 30

Theres no need though for the general abuse and "scum" treatment i get. Just because im young (20) and drive an impreza does not automatically mean im the areas biggest drug dealer and theres a need to search me every two days.

I can see a reasoning behind random stops but when its the same coppers or the same areas all the time or multiple times in one area in one night (up to 5 times sometimes) theres no need for it and have noticed its normally the "younger coppers" who take pleasure in stopping me and giving me what i regard as bullsh*t i dont care for their smarm comments or abusive language at me. The more old school police take a much better stance on things actually do radio checks and beleive it when it tells them i have insurance and treat you like a human being. I am just generalising here as im sure not all police are a pain or abusive but it is just my opinion.
