FAO Alan re:Cyprus
Hi mate, I've been before, but thought I'd ask your opinion as you spent a bit of time there.
I'm thinking of booking to go to paphos again but this time it'll be 21st december over xmas & returning just after the new year. Now I know its not going to be as hot as the summer months, but what sort of temps do they get out there at that time of year & will it be a ghost town or will everything still be open ?
I've been a few times during spring & summer and we loved the place but not sure what to expect at xmas.
cheers
Phil

Sorry mate....
OK.. I'd say it's going to be a coolish to medium summers day here.. We'd acclimatised so we felt the cold, but tourists were knocking about in shorts... Other days it can get a bit nippy... So one moment you'll be in T-Shirts, next a coat...
The sea temp won't have changed, but the wind can get up at this time and will make some decent waves with white tops... But you'll be able to swim.. maybe not everyday.. but most.
Xmas isn't a big thing there really and is pretty commercial.. But some hotels will have some activities etc.. mostly for the Kids. We did a Xmas / New year thing in a 5* and it was superb.. we never left the hotel and there was plenty to do... with some good entertainment.. Overall I'd say it was quieter than a summer season.. so things will be less hectic..
A good tip would be to head into the Troodos mountains and do some skiing or 'black bagging'' some great empty slopes and quality snow... Guaranteed for Xmas day.. so pretty good..It does get a bit busy.. but there's plenty of space to do your thing.. you can even hire a cabin for a few days if you like that sort of thing... Troodos village does a great Xmas market too..
After the snow and on the way back down drop into Akrotiri and have a swim!
If you do go.. drive the coast road back to Akrotiri and head North to the Mountains.. Good driving road.. and say Hi to the Guards on the gate at Episkopi base.. Aahh memories..
Try the waterpark at Akrotiri too (unless you fancy a 3 hour drive to Ayia Nappa).. good fun for the 'older' child
I'm sure you'll have a good time.. and don't forget the rock!!

thanks mate, just what I was wanting to hear.
as I said, I've been before & love the place. we've never managed to make it to troodos, but we will this time as I'm going to book a 4wd jeep type thing to get us up there.I'll be a bit more careful driving this time as I got pulled for speeding last time, I think it was for doing about 80mph on a newly opened motorway with a limit of 60kph
I understand the acclimatised comment as I remember working in Portugal for 5 months and by December we were in overcoats and the tourists were still in shorts in about 18 degree weather.
thanks again

Good point on the jeep. I had a classic WRX and got a lot further than 2wd wheel drive cars and the roads can get get blocked toward the top..
I've also been pulled a few times, but they were pretty warming to the car and I ended up with a bollocking (plus their paperwork was horrendous when a Military guy got pulled.. so that was a bonus..)
BTW.. They always hide around bends on the motorway
BTW2.. I've sent you a mail re my UK performance account..

Its about 18 degrees over in Pafos right now and about 21 in Limassol. Temperatures dropping everyday!
Its starting to get really wet now as well, although it isn't raining everyday. Too cold to go swimming in the sea or go down the beach, and it is very overcast most days.
The pubs and clubs are open in Pafos all winter, but are really quite apart from the drunken Squaddies!
The WaterParks are all closed for winter.
