Oil!!

Oil!!
Right, this is going to be a really blonde/girlie question but I've no idea! My ex used to do all this stuff so I haven't a clue.
Checked my oil yesterday and have no idea where the ideal level is!! There is an "L" and and "F" on the dipstick but where in relation to them should the level be??? Looked in handbook but about as useful as a chocolate fireguard!
Also - what oil should I be using if I need to top it up?
Cheers guys!!

L = LOW - F = FULL
Get the engine warm and then switch off and let it settle for 5 minutes or so. To get an even consistent reading I use a small length of rubber hose and gently blow down the dipstick tube briefly to remove airlocks in the pipe. Aim to get the oil level between the 2 marks, erring towards full, but not actually full.
You should really top it up with what was used for the last fill, as oils can have quite different properties and can be spoilt by mixing. Ring whoever did the last change and ask what they used, or it may be listed on the invoice. If a service is coming up though don't worry too much and use whatever's lying about. At the next service use something like Silkolene ProS, Millers CFS or Motul 300V, all in 5W40 spec.

I use Mobil One 0W-40 oil which is fully synthetic - I believe this is also what Subaru use if you take it in for an oil change.
There are LOADS of posts about oil on Scoobynet - most make my headache more than if I'd been sniffing oil though

Not wishing to contradict you Simon, but 0W is a bit thin for a Scooby. I always say 5W for everyday high perf driving and occasional track, 10W for reasonably mod'd hi-perf and regular track and 15W for heavy mods and frequent track or strip.

I did it from cold yesterday and from what I could see wasn't even up to the L mark so must be really low. Was just up to where it twists. Driveway also on slight tilt so suppose that wouldn't have helped much.
Will try again from being warm and see if it reads any difference.
Thank you!!

Try and park it on the level, and check it in the same place each time. The flattish sump on the boxer engine gives poor readings on anything other than a good level flat.

Oil is a very contentious issue and full of old wives tales and people on many sides of many fences all spouting technical this and technical that....
I used to use 0-40 on the Prodrive WR... The guy who did my servicing got the oil from his Garage (Audi) and they used to put it in TT Turbos, RS4's & 6's and changed it every 10k. As I changed mine every 5k, I saw no issue there...
On my last service for the T20, Matt (@the Racing Line) reccomended 10-60. I was initially very dubious thinking 'too thick' as many posts were predicting doom and gloom with anything above 5-40. I rang Litchfield / Powerstation who said they use 10-50 ........
If you change your oil regularly (5k), then even a semi-synth would possibly suffice on a std WRX (I believe Subaru reccomend it). I wouldn't want to put it in anything beyond a WRX though or running beyond standard power...
Jo - If you stick with Fully Synth and change it regularly, if you drive like you should , then you'll find anything from a 0-40 to a 10-60 will do. 5-40 is a good compromise and Dave's suggested makes are excellent...
