WHAT WOULD YOU DO
Ive finally had enough of the car its been in the garage again for
.1 yet another gear box problem
.2 its costing me approx £500 quid a month with insurance loans just to sit standing
.3 after 2 months on the road its needed 4 tyres 2 brake pads gear box and a clutch .a service is due and to pay for the warranty after this period of time pleases bear in mind that its only covered 19000 miles 4 of them with me and was purchased from a official dealer and ive only had it since december
.4 its also got the stigma from jelous work mates friends/ of a shed
.5 keeps letting me down for work and more importantly WYIOC MEETS
.6 ive got 9 points and need something a bit less notice-abul
ON THE OTHER SIDE its brought me a new bunch of mates from the wyioc which over time could mature into good friends and good nights out
so the question is WHAT WOULD YOU DO
OPTION 1 KEEP THE CAR STRUGGLE WITH THE CASH FOR UPGRADES IE wheels colours till july when i work away with lockheed
OPTION 2 CUT MY LOSSES AND SETTLE THE COST WITH THE GARAGE BY SELLING THE CAR - THEN BUY A DIFFERENT ONE MAYBE A EVO IN SEPT but don't want to lose the ties with the club
option 3 hope they fix it and try to claw some money back from subaru uk for the warranty service as this was the money for france and am/will be gutted if i cannot go
option 4 go full time in the army as apose to the TA and get a goldern handshake of 4 grand to finish the car
I need honest answers because im at a loss on what to do being its white and not easy to replace plus i love the colour if it was blue id have sold it today
im at a proper loss and sugestion would be appricated
cheers james k.

Difficult one, mate.
Most importantly I suppose, if you're having to struggle financially then GET RID
I had to do it with the Evo, and as much as it p1ssed me off, I knew it was the right hing in the long run. No car is worth getting into debt over.
On the other hand, if it's a case of having to struggle for a few months before the money's there then I'd probably try and cope, BUT... It has been a bit of a lemon as far as gearboxes are concerned, and as for the list of what it's needed with regards tyres and pads, either you've VERY unlucky, you're a **** of a driver, or the dealer have stung you big time and sold you something that should have had these things sorted before it left their forecourt.
I'd be tempted to have a serious (but courteous) word with the manager at Golden's, explaining what's been needed re tyres, pads, etc. and the gearbox problems, and would be inclined to suggest that they consider either sorting the car and offering some form of extended warranty FOC, or seeing if they would change it for another car completely. I think the sale of goods act may cover you in some way or other, as you've bought something which cannot be used in the way in which it is intended to be.
...but I'm no legal expert.
Incidentally, my first ever post on SN had exactly the same title as this thread

I agree, this is a tough call.
To start with, I feel you're on to a looser regarding the wear & tear parts like tyres and pads, as your warranty won't cover these.. I also agree that you need to have a chat with the management and see what they say as regards to your statuatory rights regarding the gearbox and the car being ultimately unfit for purpose..
If the answer is not what you want to hear and you end up having to foot a large bill, then It's probably best to get shut as you never know what's around the corner if you've got a lemon or a 'Friday afternoon car'...
Work your way through some shows with Lockheed and save up for the next motor... Don't let Top Gear Mag () or your current experience put you off Scoobs.. You've just been unlucky... Getting an Evo won't make your jealous freinds less jealous... you'll also be stuck with higher running costs...
Your 9 points are as likely to get to 12 if you're behind the wheel of anything the right side of your current courtesy car power, so another excuse that doesn't hold up.
No one ever said owning such a car was risk or cost free.. You have to pay for the pleasure... so if you want less pleasure, want to save the current running costs, likely future FPN's, have work mates who aren't jealous and have something sensible to drive about in, then you'll be turning up to the car park in a polo. And I wouldn't wish that on anyone... trust me.
See how the gearbox story pans out and don't make rushed decisions.. Don't saddle yourself with a rising debt or money pit and get out whilst you're ahead... or slightly behind.. regroup the finances in a short while and get straight back to Scoob (or similar ownership).....
You've quickly established yourself in the club and it's great to have you around (especially for BBQ's )... so your club mates will be supportive of your decision and we'll help you through the lean times as you await the decision either way...

Hi James,
Im really sorry to hear about your troubles with the car, and can only hope that you get them sorted soon.
I had similar problems with a golf tdi 3 years ago, which cost me £3k, to put back on the road and endless trips to the dealer having new Turbos fitted. So i can appreciate how you feel in terms of being let down and a little lighter in your pocket.
As for the France trip, if for whatever reason you do not have the car ready, or have decided to get shut then you are more than welcome to come along with me, and we'l put you on my insurance.
You are so right about the club though, it is all about the people, everyone has made me so welcome, a real great bunch of people.
In the meantime mate i think you have my number now, so if your at work and fancy a drink i will pop up one night, just let me know.

As you may recall, I have been through similar decisions recently. I could do with selling the Scoob to finance other things, but as long as it isn't necessary I'll resist it.
As for your mechanical gremlins, the tyres and brakes can only be expected. Scoobs are heavy on both, and an aggressive driving style will only compound this. TBH I've not seen you drive so can't comment, but I find that 'round town I am quite happy to pootle in the Scoob enjoying the burble and the admiring glances. Shame the glances are all from 9-14 year old boys instead of 18-25yo laydees Save the ferocious stuff for the suitable roads, and use the car well. I can strongly recommend driving tuition from PaulEds which will smooth out your style to make you much faster and yet composed and safe. My brake pads seem to last forever these days
I'd say keep pressuring Subaru on the 'box problem, but if you do end up having to pay out for it, get it done somewhere cheap, reliable and respected such as Scoobyclinic. If the 'box is the only problem over ordinary wear 'n tear then once sorted you should have a superb reliable motor, as we all know Scoobs generally are, and as long as you can afford and justify the expense then keep it as you will only regret it the second the new owner drives it away. The only way that pain is ever relieved is when you've sold it to move up to something better, and even then with Scoobs they still tug your heart strings.

CB I think your right on this one and can agree, JB the wrx box should handle approx 350 hp and about the same amount of torque, but can be shortened by launch's and flat shifting, so am not sure if your getting a dodgy box put in or if it's the driving style, How does the clutch feel?
I think you could ask in the drivetrain area about the box messing up...they should be able to tell you alot more, I have seen the same model wrx handle 400 hp on the std box, but the clutch does not last very long as expected..

I LIKE THAT COMMENT but the problems stem from the clutch not being fitted right and causing gear box damage then being fixed not replaced then fixed again
