1. Mobil 1 is a good oil, but can be on the thin side. The most common one sold here is 0W40 which doesn't offer enough protection from cold IMHO. I can recommend Silkolene ProS and Millers CFS, both in 5W40. If you were to modify highly, or regularly track I'd say go for a 10W50 or 10W60.

2. I prefer a decent lifetime performance filter to the paper one, especially with the resonator removed so's you can hear the spool-up, induction and dump Green, K&N and JR Racing are all good, ITG have some bad history with Scoobs.

3. The plugs should have been done at 30k so there should be no reason to change them yet.

I can recommend HDC Subaru at Hebdon Bridge. A bit like a scaled down Scoobyclinic but staffed with knowledgeable and skilled guys who'll take care of your car like it's their own, and be completely fair over their superb prices. Scoobyclinic is good too, but a little further and possibly slightly dearer and harder to get in at short notice. If you want a main dealer then Robert Bowetts in Hunslet do a 10% discount for WYIOC members.

HTH.

ITG is a filter, like a K&N, Green or JR Racing, but they have a history of causing MAF failure on Scoobs, albeit on the hotwire MAF's used on 98-00 cars. Get a K&N or Green And no, you don't need to remap for just a filter change. The ECU will learn the new airflow within 50 miles and adjust fuelling to suit.

The resonator is in the NSF wing and is fed air by the ram-air scoop at the front left of the engine bay. It is there to quieten down the induction sounds as Joe Ordinary would be put off by such things. As we're all a bit immature we like whoosh, roar and ptshhh sounds and so removing it gives us a bit of a smile, as well as making sure your engine gets fed with more, cooler, cleaner air. I removed Raf's yesterday HDC and The 'Clinic will stamp the book.

SDPP... My mate Des can't stamp either.

TBH, and this is a good discussion point.....

If Joe, Des or a decent mechanic serviced the car regularly with a good quality oil and filter every 6 ish months and did a regular check and replace of minor parts (brakes, bushes, plugs, leads etc.....) around the car then this would show that you really cared for your motor. I did this to my previous Scoob and a club member (Daz) bought it knowing that it had been well serviced at 3-6 month intervals... For £60 I got 5Ltrs of Fully Synth 5-40, filter, fluid checks throughout, a good listen, lookover and the car jacked up and Des crawling about underneath checking that everything was in order. I also had multiple pads changed and brakes properly serviced I also got a cup of coffee as I waited.. Main thing was, he knew how much the car meant to me and he knew it inside out...

But if If they could provide a quick invoice or signed paper and a promise to verbally support the invoice of the work done, then I'd be inclined to pick a car like that. A regular service at a Garage will cost you more and for the same price you could get 2-3 Joe or Des services.....Of course, you'd have to find a buyer who understood that a dealer stamp doesn't guarantee that the work is bomb proof and that a simple service if done 2 or 3 times the reccomended intervals, is probably the best thinhg you can do to your car....

Of course you don't get the piece of mind, warranty etc that you get at a garage and a major service would probably be best done where you can get a stamp, but to me, the regular changes and professional examine of your motor every good few months, if done right, will keep it in tip top condition and enable you to spot stuff before it goes wrong.

I've not been to Joe, but once we've spoken a few times and I trust him with my baby () then I can see no reason why minor services need a stamp.

Discuss..

I got a cup of tea at HDC offered before they even said good morning, you don't get that at Scoobyclinic My 50k with oil/filter change, coolant drop (as they remove the rad to do the cambelt), cambelt change and check over of all fluids was £206 all in, although I did supply oil and filter (£45). A little more than mates rates, but not significantly when you consider the work involved in this quite major service and the all important rubber stamp. Got another cuppa after I returned in their Leggy loaner from Hebdon Bridge, finishing off my salami and goats cheese ciabatta and large decaf cappuccino nicely

Also, me being a bit dumb first thing in a morning, I'd forgotten my service book. Howard brought his rubber stamp with him to Elvington the following weekend to stamp it without hesitation to save me another trip into the wilds of Halifaxdale or wherever it is

Al, I'm not sure about a simple oil change service, just give them a ring.

Mine has been running like that for 2 years now with a JR Racing filter. No experience of PiperCross.

I have the Green "Group N" from TSL, with that alone it sounds better

As others have said, to keep a warranty valid the company has to use Genuine parts and be VAT registered. Who is the warranty with I can check if we deal with them and see what they stipulate?
