THE EXORCIST PART 3
The 'gotcha' scene of a nurse (Tracy Thorne) making her rounds in an asylum, when she is suddenly attacked from behind by a white-cloaked individual with large shears who proceeds to cut her head off - juxtaposed with an image of a headless statue; also the scene when a nursing home resident crawls insect-like on the ceiling over an unaware Det. Kinderman (George C. Scott)
Also, the belgium film "man bites dog" about a sociopath and his documentary film crew. The scene after he knocks on the door of a random apartment, and the slow pan around the room as you take in the utter horror of the slaughter. Totally random, and very scary!

Didn't realise that the 70's version was a re-make of a 1940's film. Was it silent?

The 1st Halloween was a classic, Helen still can't watch this on her own The Descent is amongst the best recent horror movies to recapture the feel. The DTS surround on the DVD is well creepy in a dark room I was only 9 (a big 9 ) when I saw Alien on the big screen, so that was a bit scarey back then. VHS was just getting going then and video nasties were the big thing at school. Who remembers The Burning ? The biggest jump out of the seat moment of all time has to be when the head falls out of the hole in the boat in Jaws though.
