Default Tracking...... Help please.

I don't know too much about tracking but I'll pop something down and hope it makes sense.. This is for Katrina's A Class, but I reckon it's the same for all motors..

Question is did they do a proper job for the £29.99? (Tracking check and adjustment only )

Local Just Tyres changed all 4 for the A class. Front one showed a lot of wear on the inside of the RH Tyre. They stuck the laser tracker thing on and the folowing readings were taken...

Front Left +3
Front Right +1
Total is therefore +4
Book says +2.8
Back Right 10
Back left 13

I've no idea what these represent, but they said the front readings were the only things that mattered as the rear reading gave how much the steering was out and track width were different... anyway..

Young dude couldn't adjust the front left at all. Bolts were solid or whatever..
Manager gets down on the front left and adjusts the right to read -0.4

I ask shouldn't they be the same? Manager tells me that the total reading should equal +2.8.

Therefore if the front right was +8 then he'd need to make the front left -5.2.

OK I said... ta. Not convinced.. I paid and walked away...

Was he right?

I think you need Stuart Tams phone number

I assume those readings are in Milimeters, from the tyre wear it appeared to be towing out too much on the O/S/F wheel but the figures they got (If mm) it didn't seem too bad. Was the steering wheel straight before and after they made the adjustment(s)?

They put the front tyres on some disks and put a clamp on the steering wheel at TDC. The clamp stayed on for the whole check and adjustment and they asked for the engine to be running as the Steering pump had to on..

The two front tracking units had spirit level markers which were spot on.. so they appear to have set it up correctly..

I'd only ever let Tams do my tracking

As it's the A-Class and thus highly unlikely to be used to the performance level of the Scoob, I'd just hope they were right and re-check the wear in 5k miles or so. If you're at all concerned at that point get it re-done, if all looks OK then you've saved 50 quid or so.

I took the honda in for the tracking because it was pulling to the N/S all the time also spare wheel down to the wire on the inside rim (It had been swapped for the sale, I never saw it because it had the cover on it ) anyway..........

Honda is supposed to be 0.0

The guy used 4 wheel alignment laser system with the spirit levels in them and the readings were.............

Across the front
FR -4
FL +2

Front to rear
RL +4
RR +5

He then adjusted the lasers so that the back wheels were showing 0 on both which gave readings of

Across the front
FR -2
FL +2

Front to rear

Both 0

I watched him do it and I questioned about the -2 to +2 readings and he told me that as long as the readings between the fronts were = to 0 then it was OK. I was unsure but when I drove away the pulling towards the kurb side seemed to be cured.

NB. both track rod ends were in good condition and were easily adjustable, if one of yours is not that may be causing a problem in it's self, especially if the car has been kurbed or something.

Hope this helps.

It does mate thanks. No too worried about the readings themselves, but the fact that he'd dialled out the few mm on the RHS alone was in doubt..

What you've said that backs him up.. cheers chap!

You're welcome, tracking is a pain in the **** at the best of times cos no-one but garages have the kit

What about a WYIOC tracking kit for exclusive use of members, all you need to do is increase the fees to £10,000 per month
