Donnington Track Day - 29th December
Okay folks put you name down if you want to go on this track day and head across to the Donnington circuit web site to book Donington Park Online.
The cost is £99 for the day, in sessions of 20 minutes each - likely to get one session per hour, i.e. 6 sessions in the day. It is an unsilenced session, which is quite rare - and may bring out the supercars to play - many Ferraris and Lambos dont pass the usual noise limit.
I have booked - Intermediate grade
I have also booked a 20 minute tuition slot as I am new to the circuit.

Come on guys - 4 weeks to go - surely there has to be a motoring xmas present to yourselves.
Just got the car back from Powerstation - so looking forward to the chance to play again.

Great video - many thanks for that. Amazing how such footage, plus TOCA and Dunlop guides can give you a feel for the circuit before you get there.
What car are you running - looks and sounds like a black new age STi? Also interested in the cameras - are you using bullet cams?

Car is STi MY03 with about 340ish BHP and T25 suspension package. I tried very hard to keep up with the 911 Turbo, but it had the legs on me down the straight.
Yes, a bullet camera connected to a DVD Camcorder in the car. Been using it for a couple of years now and can get some great footage with it. Usually change its position for each sesson I am out and then edit it all together when I get home, and also check the times
You will need to have suitable suction mounts for both, and hope they do not fall off like mine did down the main straight.

Very similar to mine then - I have the 3 way AST on MY04 STi with standard PPP.

Just borrowed a bullet cam but could not get it to connect (yet) to my Panasonic GS400 camcorder. With track organisers getting restrictive on the use of camcorders in the car (even with professional mounts) the bullet cams look good - esp if I can get the intercom audio onto the footage

Feedback from the day
As it turned out then guys I was the only one to make the trip to Donington though thanks to Jon Cass who dropped in on the way past in the pm. Also was the only scoob, though a silver WRX did turn up later on. Follow this link if you want to see the cars on the day TRAKZONE CAR DAY
The weather was dire, heavy ran and wind in the morning but the track dried out in the pm.
Lesson 1 - Toyo R888s work great in the damp (i,e, as at Cadwell in November) but have almost no grip when it is raining. The first session with heavy rain on the R888s was the most scary/entertaining time on track - all good experience. The guy in the track BMW in front of me was spinning up his rears in the pit lane, in front of the entry marshall . Changed to Toyo T1R after 2 sessions and the grip improvement was substantial - though still no heat in the tyres. A wet day certainly reduces tyre wear.
Good points about the Donington day. The track itself is great, with good elevation changes. Very wide with loads of run off and big gravel traps - many cars went off the circuit but none that I saw were badly damaged. Facilities are teriffic with over 30 two bay garages - I got there early enough to bag one (they are free) which given the weather was a real bonus. They also did not mention any restriction on data logging in the instructions and I used the Drift Box in the pm and the marshalls had no problem with it. They are also relaxed about video camera usage provided it is attached in the front of the car with a pro mount - and again the marshalls check.
Bad Points about the day. Too many cars and in my group (Intermediate) too many drivers unable or unwilling to drive in the wet and keep the car on the track. This meant red flags on every session in the afternoon for me, and we got about 20 mins track time instead of 60 mins. To be fair to the organisers they gave a very stern briefing, and I get the impression they have had serious problems recently with the standard of driving (including wrong way on the track, ignoring reds, checkered etc). Despite the fact there were some very fast cars in the Expert group I would be tempted to choose that next time as the standard of driving was better (though more aggressive). Donington is one of the top three tracks in the UK in terms of status, and I think this means is attracts a different crowd. Cadwell for example felt like a club meet, Donington seemed to be more about trailers and track day toys.
On the day I was also using the PSi3 unit for the first time on track (mainly looking at oil temp). In normal road use oil temp maxes out at about 95-98 degrees C. On the track, after 20 mins this got to about 105 degress (and was stable) so just a partial rise. The alarm on oil temp is set at 115 degrees C.
As usual I am now thinking about the next trip. Javelin, who ran the Cadwell event in November have a number of events - see the link Javelin Trackdays | Trackday and Airfield Driving Days at Cadwell Park, Elvington and other circuits. I am tempted by the 2 sprint type courses offered at Barkston Heath on the 24th March.
