Wandering/Instability
(Williams Clio)
Does anyone have any ideas I could check before taking it to the garage with the following problem.
When I accelerate hard the car pulls towards the drivers side, then when I decelerate it pulls back towards the passenger side. This problem only happens when the car is in gear.
What could be causing this?? I've done all the visual checks on ball joints/bushes/mountings etc.
Cheers

Sounds like exaggerated torque steer, as scoobyduo above says, check the usual suspects, diff, shaft CV, bearings. Can you see any uneven tyre wear ? Might also be worth a geo check !

Hi Daz
I had exactly the same symptons on a 205 GTi. It can be caused by a number of things, including drive shaft, but the most common cause is worn bushes on the lower suspension arm (also called wishbone).
To check jack up and take wheel off - then see if you can feel any movement in the bushes - you need to give it some force - any movement then the bushes are gone.
On the pug you can get replacement bush set for about £15 and with some effort replace the bushes. Alternatively you can get replacement wishbones.
Another - less likely cause - can be failed drop links - these are also quite cheap (off ebay) and are easy to replace.
Hope this helps - you might want to surf clio specific forums - as all of the above relates to the Pug.
