Engine Upgrade - MY04 STi

Engine Upgrade - MY04 STi
Any experience/advice guys on sensible work on PPP STi, to take her from the stock 300BHP/Nm towards the 400 mark.
The warranty expires in 4 months and whilst the money gets eaten up by disk, pads, tyres at the moment I am starting to think about engine mods.
The main use will be track days, sprints and possibly single venue tarmac rallies, so good torque low down with reduced turbo lag would be more use than top end speed.
Also good if there is a relatively local tuner I can trust with this such as Scooby Clinic, TSL or RCM.
Anyway any advice gratefully received.
Dave

I am pretty sure you will need to upgrade the intercooler to go for the 400 mark, however this does not have to be a front mount as there are some pretty good top mount variants out and about now.
Scoobyclinic will be able to give you some good 'free' advice on what why and cost

Dave.. This is for the JDM twin scroll straight from the Powerstation website.. Not exact for you, but gives you an idea..(though they do seem to be replacing the Turbo, so I can't see why it wouldn't work on yours)
Stage 4 Tune:
IHI Twin Scroll Garrett Core Hybrid Turbo,
650cc Injectors, Large Inlet Hose,
EcuTek Re-Map,
Milltek Exhaust, K&N Filter
~400+bhp - £4249 + VAT
Upgrade from Stage 2/3 (340/350 BHP) - £2800 + VAT
My suggestion is to go Powerstation. Their engineering is second to none with the T series stuff and they will do tuning for road and track..

Ok here is what I would recomm, for the magic 400..
larger turbo td05/06 20g, very good top end power or if you want a car with better midrange then opt fot the 18g, this has less top end power, so depends where you want to keep it revved up to, also heard the MD series turbo's are good but you need to look at how much lag they will have on a 2 litre engine..
price new..approx 850..second hand approx 550
You will struggle to get enough power through the standard exhaust manifold, your options are get the standard cast iron ones ported for better flow, or a set of tubular mainifolds, the first will again reduce spool up time and the latter have a better high midrage/top end power, ps don't buy a set of cheap ebay ones they will crack and ned fixing or replacing..GT spec are very good imo..approx cost 350 to 400.. don't buy second hand unless in very good nick..
the standard air filter will struggle to get enough air needed for the turbo etc above 360bhp so an induction kit will be the option RCM do a very good K and N cone filter,
as for an exhaust go an open neck 3" downpipe with a 3" center section and back box, revolution cat back and an RCM downpipe are common choices, and the revolution is a quite system with very good performance results..regs for track day DB??
A wise choise is a one step colder grade spark plugs, don't know exactly the idea behind this but it's done..
some mappers prefer a 3 port boost solnoid to control boost better than the standard one
You already have the prodrive fuel pump so that should be ok if not or there as issues with fuel switch to a walbro 255lph, whitch will sort the problem..
thats it oh and a good mapper of your choice.. with ecutek approx cost 550ish..

Thanks for the advice guys - good background to help plan (and save) for the next upgrade.
Seems that about £3k to £4k for 400bhp/Nm is about the sweet spot for the 2litre engine.
Al - I agree that Powerstation are a good bunch of guys - they have done all the suspension work on my car plus brakes and Psi3 - but the 6 hr round trip is a pain, especially when you have to go back - so was hoping for somebody local.
Killa - I might just pop down to Elvington as its local

Hi Red
Mines just about there (392/350) 53 plate sti..........attached costs in brackets to give you some idea.
TD05 18G turbo (new £920.00)
Revolution 3" exhaust including backbox (new £285)
Harvey Smith Up-pipe and Headers ported and wrapped (£400.00)
RCM 3" downpipe (new £215)
Turbo blanket (£80)
Forge recirculating DV (s/h £75)
RCM 80mm Induction Kit with Trumpet (new £250)
3 port boost solenoid (s/h £45)
Uprated fuel pump (already on car but budget £100)
Remap by Bob Rawle (£400 - budget more if it's your first map-license fee etc)
Think thats all....................
Additional bits to cope with the power:
AST suspension (£1000.00)
Whiteline ARB; ALK; Alloy Drop links (£300.00)
Knocklink (£100.00)
Factor in some labour costs-mine came in at less than £500.00 all in throughout.
Both Andy F and Bob Rawle agreed TMIC and standard injectors were suitable for 400bhp so I stuck with these rather than going down the FMIC route. The 18G turbo is as Ali rightly points out better for mid range and spool but you lose some power at the top end. Out on the road this is obviously not an issue for me and the 18G is certainly suited to my driving style.
Running 1.45 by the way.

Hi Dave
No problems Glad it proves useful.
No ecu change. Stock ecu stays in situ and is remapped using Ecutek software. Andy Forrest; Bob Rawle and Richard Bulmer have all mapped my car at various stages of tune.
First map will be the expensive one (usually around £650.00 depending on mapper) which includes the purchase of the "license" Subsequent remaps with the same mapper will be approx £200.00 plus vat. If you like wasting money like me and go to a new mapper they will charge an additional fee as the previous map will be locked (visible only to the guy who mapped it if you see what I mean) so they have to strart with a new "base" map.
I've travelled to Scotland to see Andy and Swindon to see Bob. Both were very good and are obviously very reputable. Both do group buys and will come to you which, if you can get a few people to spread the travelling expenses, can work out cheaper.
Best of luck

Hi Dave
How soon are you looking at doing the engine mod?
Don't want to give to much away at the moment but Im in the prosses of teeming up with Owen Developments as a suppler for them.
One of the kits, will be a 400bhp mod.
P.M. me if you want some more info.
Cheers
Rick
