Scuffers on the prowler for your Scooby !!
Hi Guys,
I know i don't talk on here very much (as I only know Apple)but i have to tell you about this, I live in Thornhill (Dewsbury) and this morning I found my prize Bugeye WRX with it's steering and ignition barrel smashed to bits, the unerving bit, no damage to the outside locks or windows, how did they get in ? i have the usual Cat 1 alarm + Tracker which must have done something right as they couldn't get the car started, Police reckon they have some kind of scanner to activate the locking, if this is the case none of the Scoobies in the area are safe, get them locked away if you have a garage !!
Has anyone heard of this before ? I spoke the a sales guy at Golderns and he said he'd not heard of this one before, maybe it's just me that's suffered bad luck, but I still think it's a reason to keep your eyes on your Scoobies.
Now i'm gonna have to try and get my car sorted, new steering colume I reckon + ignition barrel etc etc, car will need towing I guess, there go my no claims + stupid excess, time to buy a boring car me thinks.
Rich.

Rich... Don't let the scum beat you mate. Worthless pieces of garbage with nothing positive to provide to society who simply prey on decent folk... These parasites should be exterminated... nuff said.
There are people in the club who'll advise and help put this right.. you can give the boys at Precious Metals a call and I'm sure they'll be able to help fix the damage...
Get yourself down to a meet and you'll be welcomed... every one in the club is a top bloke or girl...don't be a stranger

Hi Alan,
I double that, well said, I've been meaning to come to meet for while, maybe nows the time to join up,
Who are Precious metals ? do you have there number ? like I said to Craig I'm gonna look at the options tomorrow with a clear head, your suggestions are much appreciated though.
I'm just worried about everyone else round here, I know there at least 2 new age sti's + 2 wrx's in Thornhill that could suffer the same fate.
Have you heard of this before ?
Rich

Me too, just checked on the security forum, there's nothing mentioned, might be a new thing, I thought somehow I might have left it unlocked, but this is not possible as the car relocks after only a few seconds anyway, and I would never leave it unlocked, the central locking all still works perfectly, it locked while the CSI team were sorting out finger prints etc, it's bizarre.

Getting in is quite easy, and most ******* with any TWOC'ing experience can do it with little/no damage. The thing they didn't know is that the ignition barrel has a transponder which talks to the chip in the key and then to the ECU. If any one part doesn't synchronise then the car won't start. If you get a duplicate key from anywhere but a main dealer it will not work until it has been sync'd with the ECU. Subsequently, smashing the locks doesn't work. Similarly, if you tried to acquire a new barrel from a scrappers, unless you get the matching key AND ECU it won't work. That's why most Scoobs (newage) are stolen with the owners keys. Trackers aren't worth a fart these days as they are based on GSM technology and can easily be disabled with devices sold on eBay for not much cash. Keeping the keys safe and a Disklok, or Dipol/Barrier linkage lock are the best protection.
Sorry about your experience, but don't let it put you off. Remember, BMW's, Audi's, Ford's, and even Vauxhauls get stolen too, every day and everywhere.

AFAIK scanning works by the ******* having some device that 'reads' the signal sent from your keyfob when you arm the alarm, it then transmits the same signal (once you've left the vicinity) and this fools the security system into thinking you've returned to the car and pressed the keyfob. However (also AFAIK) most, if not all, modern security systems use some form of encoding to prevent this

The way I read this, the scanner would enable them to pick up the alrm key fob (they'd have to be very close by) to programme a dummy switch, this would then allow them to switch off the alarm system.
But the key fob to ignition connection is another, separate connection, that is built into the car and not by the third party alarm system. This signal is very localised and maybe even encrypted / rotated so that it is impossible to pick up and decrypt from distance (possibly direct electrical with the key needed to be inserted).
This would explain why the car wouldn't start and they tried hot wiring through the barrel.
Some more research required, methinks...

can i just say there is a device that doesnt need the code from the key fob it actually scans whatever you point it at and finds the code via your alarm, not saying that i have ever used it before but i have been introduced to this clever piece of kit,its not a very well known device, and are only normally used on top end cars like the new merc and so on,in the criminal world they just call it a scanner.prolly wanted your car for a robbery or some other kinda job.sry to hear about it m8

Hey Guys,
Once again thanks for the interest in this, there are some interesting answers appearing, as for an update, spoke to few places today, have a few options and speaking to Zak from Precious metal tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to move forward with this, for your amusement I can be seen in a black and silver Smart car which i've borrowed from work, and to be fair it's quite fun to drive, just can't get used to sitting in the boot.
Cheers

The key transponder is wireless RF, so no contact. There has been a couple of cars taken by pro's bringing a complete set of ECU, barrel and key, but it is too much hassle for most *******. So much easier to get the keys.
FWIW, I think the best line of defense is the OE alarm and immobiliser (no point changing a perfectly good unit unless you want some of the specific features systems like Clifford provide such as Intellistart), Blackjax, Disklok and a Dipol or Barrier linkage deadlock. The Blackjax makes the use of the owners keys invalid, but the owners key make the physical devices invalid. The two together though protect thoroughly.

Hi Rich,
Sorry to hear of your problem - hope it's not too costly to sort
I saw you down at Autosport but you were talking to someone on the stand so I didn't dive in - I'd already had a word with Jason earlier on.
You're not too far away from a meet at the new venue - I can't make the first one but should be OK for the Feb meet if you can get there...
