Default Buying a new camera - need help!!

After having a cheapo point and click digi camera for a while, I fancy getting myself something a little better for use at this years events, and more importantly - STELVIO

So what do I go for?

Seen the Nikon D40's and the Canon 350/400D's so far.

I know a few members have the Canon's, is this the best starting point for me? Do I just get it with the kit lens, learn to use it, then upgrade to a better lens later. Or should I be buying the body and a decent lens to start with?

Probably going to buy from Jessop's, as I believe they do price matching

But also came across this

eBay UK Shop - Canon Outlet EOS SLR Cameras Compact Cameras Digital Cameras:

Seems to be worth a go to grab a possible bargain if they do have 12 months manufacturers warranty?

Cheers for any help

buy a good base camera which has a decent lens, learn to use, then upgrade, i'm trying to put away pennies for a telescopic, but thats gonna cost me dearly!!

got mine in jessops, they did me a cracking deal and i got moneyback from nikon too, plus extra warranty

Canon 400 with a sigma 18/200 lens just the job and covers all bases, as the sigma lens starts at 18 same as standard canon (18/55) lens and zooms to 200 still keeping wide angle so no great loss of veiw.

just my input mate, I am running a Canon 350D with sigma 18/200 and its just the job, I would upgrade to a 400D if I have the money

Best choice is the 400d mate, pretty much all the SLR camera you'll ever need... From experience most of the staff i've spoken to in pro camera shops lean toward Canon, AFAIK was becouse Canon manufacture every part of thier cameras, Nikon use Fuji parts and and so on...
check out topleftpixel network look back a few months they were all taken with either a 350d or a 400d...
anyhow a new 400d is £385 from amazon...
Amazon.co.uk: Canon EOS 400D Digital SLR Camera (incl. EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens Kit): Electronics & Photo

can't go wrong with that...

Si.
I took the guy's advice on here and bought the 400D.
Take a look through the Photo section on SNET to get a feel for the camera.
I got my lens kit from Jessops too with the 2GB card. Good service and I was able to hold both cameras. The Nikon has a better quality feel, but the 400D was a really nice fit for my hands.

It is waay better than me, so there's plenty of room for improvement.

AKAIK, Sticky and I will be taking our Canon's to Stelvio too (not sure if anyone else going has a Canon), so there'll be plenty of lenses, memory cards, batteries, chargers, tripods & gadgets that can be used... I'll probably be taking a laptop, so we'll be able to download to that when the cards get full....... plus jump on SNET if needs be..
