Why can't anything go right?!!?!
Just got an info pack from British Gas, look at the starting date and it says 14th July. Every piece of communiction - letter, email and phone call etc has clearly stated the starting date of 7th July.
I've handed in my notice to end on the 4th July. I've been in touch with Recruitment centre and and the training centre, the Recruitment Centre is insisting I start on the 7th and the Training Centre is insisting I start on the 14th. Contact the Recruitment centre again and told them of the situation again and they have said "Well it must be the 14th then..."
FFS I've done everything possible on my side to make sure I'm ready to start work on the 7th July, this includes handing my notice in to finish my current job on the 4th July. Now it means that I am effectively totally unemployed and more importantly, unpaid for a week due to some idiots clerical error! For them to just shrug it off as if its my fault as well has really annoyed me
Just can't believe it, how friggin hard is it to get a date right, I'm getting quite p!ssed off with this. If this is the sign of things to come I think I'll look for employment elsewhere and not bother with British Gas. What a f*cking joke!!

Mate, (you may not be able to do the same thing, but) in situations like this I always remember back to points in my life that make the situation today look like a Stelvio vacation. Such as;
It'll be OK on the night chap... these things happen. Just turn up on the 7th and see if they squeeze you in.
If not, take a week off.
- Sierra Leone where I met people in the Army who hadn't been fed in 4 days (or their kids in a week)
- Had their legs chopped off because they were in a different rebel army
- Watching kids root through steaming skips of crap to find something to eat
- Being mobbed for a bar of chocolate
- Being threatened with an loaded AK47 (a few times)
- Watching the rebel army officer beat their troops with a big stick because they couldn't count past 5
- Mates getting killed in the Falklands when I was there

Its not an extra weeks holiday though as I do not get paid and I am also aware that theres always someone worse off but at the end of the day, its not just bad luck, its someones stupid mistake that shouldn't happen. Like most people I too have outgoings that need to be paid and regardless of the situation, the bank is not going to accept "Oh it was a mix up with my start dates" when I have two months worth of outgoings coming out of one months pay.
I've spoken to my current manager, he's happy to let me stay on for another week which helps but really, is it that hard to get a date right. This is what the recruitment staff get paid for, end of the day it is important to the people wanting the job as they have to sort their own lives out to adjust to the change and to get it wrong and then just just "oops, oh well" really isn't acceptable. I don't mind mistakes so long as something is done to sort them out.

Well I've had a call back from the manager at recruitment centre, they have admitted responsibility for the mistake and will pay me for the week. Luckily enough I can still work for BMW for that week too and pull in an extra bit of money that way too.
As I said last night, it was unwillingness to accept the responsibility of the mistake and the attitude of the people I spoke to that really got me mad.
