Angry Need help........bloody useless

Im proper miffed!
This is a bit long so I apologise in advance.

Right about 6 months ago I found out my mobile phone company were taking 2 direct debits out- 1 for the phone I have now and another for a previous contract I had "cancelled".
Rang the "company" and got absolutely no where as the call centre was in India and had no record of the direct debit for the cancelled contract, blah blah blah, wasted about 20 quid on phone calls to them and decided to go straight to my bank to get the DD cancelled and found out they had been doing it for months (bit stupid on my part for not checking my statements).
So they cancelled the DD`s and I was told that I would get the money back (550 quid) and they would get the money back from the "company" and all would be sorted.....happy days.
Got the money back and alls well,no letters/phone calls from the "company" so presumed it was all sorted.....opened my mail today and got a FORMAL DEMAND from some debt company asking me for 630 quid instructed by the crappy "company"!!!
So it looks like my bank has got the money from the "company" but now they are asking me for the money back......im sick to death of them,I really dont want to ring the "company" up as I get absolutely no where so dont know what to do next.
I dont have that sort of money and I dont want to get a bad credit rating for outstanding money that I just dont owe.
Any help would be apprieciated as im usless with this sort of thing
Andy

Agree with Si. Call the debt company direct and explain the situation and that your bank (not you) recovered the money from the Phone company.

Tell them that you own nothing and that their details are related to an older account that is not in arrears and has been closed. Tell them to contact your bank for verification. Tell them you'll back it up with an email and a letter to both the debt company and the phone company customer services.

Agree with Al, also tell them you'll counter claim against them and the company for wrongfully obtaining moneys through neglegence, lack of due diligence, wasting your time.. etc ;-) no harm in stating the company name, either its not deflamatory, just a statment of fact... not talk talk by any chance is it...?

we have this bother all the time as scott changes his phone every 4 months

i would usually cancel direct debit, follow up with a email and a posted letter and request a response.....

that usually works if not you could threaten to beat them like small dogs....

chief. i had same with o2 a couple of years ago. i was paying 25 quid a month for 2 years!! only cos i cancelled the DD in the end, and o2 wrote to me asking for money. turns out, you have to give written notice that you want your contract to end after the agreed 12 month period, if not, they carry it on. i rung up and asked to cancel first time round, obv they dint cancel it. got me money back tho in the end. good luck with it all mate.
